🛋️ Large Items

Bulk & Large Item Pickup Guide 2026 🏗️

Getting rid of furniture, appliances or renovation debris? Here’s the fastest way to do it for free (or cheap).

⚠️ Never put bulk items at the curb without booking! In most cities it’s treated as illegal dumping and can result in a fine.
🛋️

Furniture & Mattresses

Schedule a free curbside bulk pickup via 311 or your city’s sanitation site. Most cities allow 2–4 free pickups per year. Confirm the day — items must be out by 7 AM.

📌 Free donate option: Habitat for Humanity ReStore, local shelters, Facebook Marketplace Free section.

🏠

Appliances (Fridge, Washer, AC)

Most cities accept appliances in bulk pickup. Fridges and ACs with refrigerant require a certified technician to remove the coolant first — ask your city when booking.

📌 Free alternative: Many appliance retailers remove old units free when delivering new ones.

🏗️

Renovation Debris

Drywall, lumber, flooring, shingles, and concrete are almost NEVER accepted in any curbside program. Rent a roll-off dumpster or hire a licensed junk hauler for renovations.

📌 Search “dumpster rental near me” or “junk hauler near me” for local services.

💻

Electronics (TVs, Computers)

Electronics are NOT accepted in regular bulk pickup. Drop at Best Buy (free for most items), Staples, or a county e-waste event. Never put TVs or computers in the trash.

📌 Manufacturer take-back: Dell, Apple, HP, Samsung all have free recycling programs.

♻️ Recycling

Recycling Guide 2026 — What Can & Can’t Go in the Blue Bin ✅❌

Contamination is the #1 recycling problem in the US. One wrong item can send a whole truckload to the landfill. Here’s the definitive guide.

✅ YES — Recyclable
  • Paper & cardboard (dry)
  • Glass bottles & jars (rinsed)
  • Aluminum cans (rinsed)
  • Steel/tin cans (rinsed)
  • Plastic #1 & #2 bottles
  • Milk jugs & shampoo bottles
  • Newspapers & magazines
  • Cardboard boxes (flattened)
  • Juice & soup cartons
  • Office paper & envelopes
❌ NO — Not Recyclable
  • Plastic bags (store drop-off only)
  • Styrofoam / polystyrene
  • Greasy pizza boxes
  • Food-soiled containers
  • Diapers & paper towels
  • Batteries & light bulbs
  • Electronics of any kind
  • Hoses, toys, rubber items
  • Black plastic trays
  • Broken window glass
🌍 Quick tip: Rinse containers before recycling — they don’t need to be sparkling clean, just no leftover food. Cardboard must be DRY — wet cardboard goes in trash.
🚨 Missed Pickup

Trash Wasn’t Picked Up? Here’s What to Do 📞

Before you call — check these steps first. Most missed pickup reports resolve within 24 hours when done correctly.

1

Wait until late afternoon on your collection day

Trucks run all day — sometimes until 5–6 PM. Don’t report before 3–4 PM unless you’re sure the truck already passed your street.

2

Make sure your bin was out before 7 AM

Routes start as early as 5 AM. If your bin wasn’t out before the truck came — that’s not a missed pickup, it’s a late set-out. The truck won’t return.

3

Report via 311 or your city’s app/website

Call 311, use the city’s 311 app, or submit online. Include your full address and collection day. Leave the bin curbside after reporting.

4

Keep bin curbside until return pickup confirmed

If you take the bin in, the crew can’t collect it on the return run. Leave it out until you get a notification or see it emptied.

💡 Top reasons cities reject missed pickup reports: Bin wasn’t out by 7 AM · Bin was overfull (lid couldn’t close) · Wrong items in bin (contaminated) · Bin was blocked by a car
❓ FAQ

Trash Pickup FAQ — Top Questions Answered 2026 🗑️

Most US cities require trash cans to be at the curb by 7 AM on your collection day. In practice, trucks can start as early as 5 AM on some routes. The safest rule: put your bins out the night before your collection day.
Yes. When a major US federal holiday falls on your collection day, most cities delay service by one day for that week. The most impacted holidays are Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check the 2026 holiday schedule above and verify at your city’s sanitation website before each holiday.
Options: (1) Schedule a free bulk curbside pickup through 311 or your city’s website — most cities allow 2–4 free per year. (2) Donate to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Salvation Army, or local shelters (many offer free pickup). (3) Post on Facebook Marketplace Free or Craigslist Free — furniture is often claimed within hours. Don’t leave furniture at the curb without booking — you may get a fine for illegal dumping.
NEVER put batteries in any bin. Free drop-off: Home Depot, Lowe’s, Staples, Best Buy, Whole Foods, most hardware stores. For car batteries: AutoZone, O’Reilly, NAPA, or any auto parts store. Search call2recycle.org for the nearest battery collection site.
Latex/water-based paint: dry it out completely (pour on cardboard or add kitty litter), then put in trash with the lid off. Oil-based paint: NEVER in trash — take to a PaintCare.org drop-off site or county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event.
Electronics are never accepted in regular trash or recycling. Free drop-off: Best Buy (accepts TVs, computers, phones), Staples, or county e-waste collection events. Manufacturer take-back: Dell, Apple, HP, Samsung all have free recycling. Find local e-waste events at epa.gov/recycle/electronics.
Yes — as long as it’s DRY and CLEAN. Break boxes down flat before placing in the bin. Remove tape and foam inserts. Greasy cardboard (like a pizza box with grease) goes in regular trash — it cannot be recycled. Wet cardboard also goes in trash, not recycling.
Wait until late afternoon, confirm your bin was out before 7 AM, then call 311 or use your city’s app to report a missed collection. Leave your bin curbside until the return pickup happens — usually within 1–2 business days. The city may not return if the original issue was the bin not being out in time or if the bin was overfull.
