Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Newton trash pickup schedule?

Newton trash pickup schedule garbage collection is managed by the City of Newton Sustainable Materials Management Division. Use the official Recycle Right Newton tool/app or the City’s trash and recycling pages to confirm your address collection day and holiday schedule.

For City curbside service, Newton uses a blue cart for trash and a green cart for single-stream recycling. Carts must be at the curb by 7:00 am on collection day, or as early as 4:00 pm the day before. Empty carts should be removed from the curb by midnight on trash day.

The most reliable way to check your Newton collection day is the official Recycle Right Newton tool/app. It gives schedule reminders and item-by-item sorting guidance, which matters because Newton uses different pathways for regular trash, recycling, yard waste, bulky items, appliances, electronics, mattresses, hazardous waste and drop-off materials.

Do not guess from a neighbor’s cart. Newton has village-style neighborhoods, private roads, multi-family properties, schools, businesses and properties that may not be entitled to normal City residential curbside collection. If you are new to Newton, confirm your address first and then build your weekly routine around the official calendar.

1

Open Newton’s trash and recycling page

Start from the City of Newton Sustainable Materials Management page. It links to the collection calendar, Recycle Right Newton, bulky item requests, Resource Recovery Center information and holiday updates.

2

Check your collection day

Use the Recycle Right Newton app or online lookup to confirm your normal weekly pickup day and receive reminders before holiday weeks or weather delays.

3

Match the correct item to the correct route

Regular bagged trash goes in the blue cart. Single-stream recycling goes loose in the green cart. Yard waste, bulky items, appliances, electronics and hazardous waste have separate rules.

4

Check weather and holiday changes

Snow, heavy rain and certain holidays can change collection timing or close the Resource Recovery Center. Check City notices before assuming a normal pickup.

Official starting point: Use Newton’s Sustainable Materials Management page for the collection calendar, Recycle Right Newton, bulky pickup and Resource Recovery Center links.

Cart Placement

Newton Cart Set-Out Rules — Blue Trash Cart, Green Recycling Cart, 3-Foot Spacing and Closed Lids

Newton’s curbside carts are collected by automated or semi-automated equipment, so placement matters. If a cart is blocked, too far from the curb, turned the wrong way, overflowing, or placed too close to bulky waste or another cart, it may be rejected.

Correct Cart Setup
  • Set carts out by 7:00 am on your collection day.
  • You may place carts out as early as 4:00 pm the day before collection.
  • Place carts within 3 feet of the curb.
  • Wheels and handle should face your house.
  • The lid should open toward the street.
  • Keep lids closed.
  • Leave at least 3 feet from cars, fire hydrants, poles, mailboxes, trees, bulky waste and other carts.
Common Rejection Causes
  • Cart not out by 7:00 am.
  • Cart blocked by parked cars or snow piles.
  • Trash or recycling outside the cart.
  • Lid forced open because the cart is overfilled.
  • Recyclables bagged in plastic bags.
  • Yard waste, hazardous waste, sharps, medications or bulky items in the blue trash cart.

Newton color warning: In Newton, the blue cart is trash and the green cart is recycling. Many cities use the opposite color logic, so do not copy sorting habits from another town.

Holiday Schedule

Newton 2026 Holiday Trash Pickup Schedule — Which Holidays Delay Collection

Newton changed its holiday collection rules effective July 2025. Collection is now delayed only for selected holidays. For all other holidays, including Juneteenth, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day, collection occurs on the regular pickup day unless the City posts a separate weather or service alert.

Blue Trash Cart

Newton Trash Collection Rules — Blue Cart, Orange Overflow Bags and Extra Cart Fees

Newton households served by the City’s curbside trash program are issued one blue trash cart. Bag your trash and place it inside the blue cart with the lid closed. No material outside the cart is collected unless it is in an official Newton orange overflow bag.

Use the Blue Trash Cart For
  • Bagged household trash that is not recyclable, reusable or compostable.
  • Small non-recyclable household items that fit inside the closed cart.
  • Materials that do not belong in the green recycling cart, yard waste, bulky pickup, HHW or Resource Recovery Center programs.
  • Occasional extra trash only when placed in official orange overflow bags.
Do Not Put in Blue Cart
  • Recyclable materials.
  • Yard waste.
  • Construction and demolition materials.
  • Household hazardous waste.
  • Sharps, needles and medications.
  • Bulky items.
  • Lithium batteries, which can cause fires.

Orange overflow bags

If you occasionally have more trash than the blue cart can hold, Newton allows official 33-gallon orange overflow bags. These are the only acceptable bags for extra trash collection. The City lists them at $2.25 per bag, sold in sleeves of 5 for $11.25. Place them next to your blue trash cart on collection day without blocking cart access.

Move-out warning: Newton specifically says move-outs and clean-outs are not included in municipal trash collection services. If you are clearing an apartment, estate, basement, attic or entire house, plan private hauling, donation, reuse and Resource Recovery Center drop-off instead of overloading the curb.

Green Recycling Cart

Newton Recycling Pickup — Green Cart, Loose Materials and Recycle Right Newton

Newton’s green cart is for single-stream recycling. Recyclables must be placed loose in the cart, not bagged. Plastic bags and plastic wrap can jam sorting equipment and can cause recyclable material to be discarded as trash.

Accepted Green Cart Basics
  • Paper and cardboard.
  • White and colored paper.
  • Flattened cardboard and paperboard.
  • Newspapers, magazines, catalogs and junk mail.
  • Aluminum cans, trays and foil.
  • Stiff plastic bottles, jugs and tubs.
  • Glass bottles and jars.
  • Paper cups, added to Newton’s accepted list in 2026.
Keep Out of Green Cart
  • Plastic bags, plastic film and plastic wrap.
  • Bagged recyclables.
  • Food or liquid.
  • Food and beverage cartons.
  • Black plastic and tiny plastic bottles.
  • Textiles, hoses, wires, chains and electronics.
  • Propane tanks, batteries, sharps and chemicals.
  • Styrofoam, which is only accepted as specific drop-off material at the Resource Recovery Center.

Newton Recycling Video Guide — What Should Go in the Recycling Bin at Home

This video is useful because Newton’s most common resident mistake is not the pickup day; it is putting the wrong material in the green recycling cart. The City of Newton links this recycling education video from its official Sustainable Materials Management education page, so it supports the local sorting guidance in this article.

Best for: New Newton residents, families, renters, students, school Green Teams, apartment residents with shared carts, and anyone confused by the blue trash cart versus green recycling cart system.

This video supports the practical guidance in this article. For exact pickup dates, holiday delays, bulky item fees, yard waste dates, Resource Recovery Center hours, household hazardous waste appointments and weather-related closures, residents should still verify details through the official City of Newton links above.

Yard Waste

Newton Yard Waste Pickup 2026 — March 23 Through December 11

Newton’s 2026 curbside yard waste collection is scheduled to begin March 23, 2026 and run through December 11, 2026. Yard waste follows the same holiday schedule as trash and recycling collection, and dates can be weather dependent.

Accepted Yard Waste Setup
  • Grass clippings.
  • Leaves.
  • Tree and shrub prunings.
  • Wood chips.
  • Small vegetable and flower plants.
  • Paper yard waste bags or your own barrel with holes for drainage.
  • Small branches bundled with twine.
Yard Waste Limits
  • Bags and barrels cannot be more than 50 pounds.
  • Barrels should be no more than 50 gallons.
  • Branch bundles must be less than 4 feet long.
  • Bundles must be less than 3 feet in diameter.
  • Yard waste is banned from disposal in regular trash by Massachusetts law.
  • Putting yard waste in the blue or green cart may result in rejection.

Christmas trees: Natural Christmas trees are collected during the first two full weeks of January. For 2026, Newton lists Christmas tree pickup from January 5 through January 16. Remove all decorations and do not bag the tree.

Yard waste page: Check Newton’s official yard waste page before leaf season, storm cleanup or holiday weeks.

Bulky Items

Newton Bulky Item Pickup — $20 Bulky Items, Appointment Required and 150-Pound Limit

Items too large to fit into the blue trash cart are called bulky items, but Newton’s bulky item program is not a free pile-at-the-curb system. Large items are collected by appointment only and fees apply.

Bulky Item Basics
  • Bulky item collection is by appointment only.
  • The City guide lists a $20 fee per bulky item.
  • Payments received by the deadline are picked up the following week.
  • Items over 150 pounds require privately contracted service.
  • Cardboard is not bulky waste; flatten it for recycling or take excess to the Resource Recovery Center.
Not Bulky Waste
  • Appliances, metal items and electronics.
  • Mattresses and box springs.
  • Overflow trash.
  • Construction materials.
  • Christmas trees.
  • Move-out and clean-out piles.

Appliances, electronics, scrap metal and mattresses

Newton handles recyclable large items separately from normal bulky waste. White goods, large appliances, electronics, scrap metal items, TVs, computer monitors, mattresses and box springs may have separate curbside recycling or drop-off fee rules. The City guide lists optional curbside collection for these items by appointment, with item fees that can differ from regular bulky item fees.

Do not hide the wrong item in the wrong category. A couch and a refrigerator are not the same disposal request in Newton. A cardboard pile is not a bulky item. A mattress is not normal bulky waste. Check the City page before paying the wrong fee or setting out the wrong item.

Schedule and pay first: Use the City’s bulky item and appliance/e-waste payment path before placing large items curbside.

Missed Pickup & Problems

Missed Trash Pickup in Newton — What to Check Before Calling 311

If Newton missed your trash, recycling or yard waste, first check whether it was really a missed route or a set-out problem. Routes can change, pickup time can vary, and carts need to follow exact placement rules.

1

Confirm your pickup day

Use Recycle Right Newton or the collection calendar. If it is a holiday week, confirm whether the holiday is one of Newton’s delayed holidays.

2

Check the set-out time

Carts and yard waste must be at the curb by 7:00 am. Placing material out after the truck passes is not a missed pickup.

3

Check cart placement and material type

Carts must be within 3 feet of the curb, 3 feet from obstacles, wheels toward the house, lid opening toward the street and lid closed. Wrong materials can be rejected.

4

Report through Newton 311 or Customer Service

Use the Newton 311 app, call 311 from a Newton landline, or call Customer Service at 617-796-1000.

Snow alert: Winter storms can delay trash and recycling by one day or more. If a snow emergency or parking ban is active, check Newton’s official winter storm updates before reporting too early.
