This page also covers what happens after you open the official links, what to tell Republic when calling, what documents to take to local facilities, current FY2026–27 rates, three included bulky pickups, the annual free dump, free compost, Reuse Room, tire events, hazardous waste, senior/disability assistance and local maps.

Which Homes Use the Residential Program?

City guidance states that single-family homes and multiplex properties with four or fewer units receive the standard residential services described here.

Property Best starting point Why
Single-family home Republic address schedule Normal residential cart service generally applies.
Multiplex — 4 units or fewer Republic customer service Residential program applies, but confirm exact account/cart setup.

How to Find Your Exact Elk Grove Trash Pickup Day

The strongest workflow is: complete address → regular weekday → Schedule A/B → official calendar color → holiday check.

1. Full Address House number + street.
2. Weekday Example: Tuesday.
3. A or B Determines recycling weeks.
4. Calendar Gray or green week + holiday.
  1. Open the official Republic Services Elk Grove page. Use the municipal Elk Grove page rather than Republic’s general national landing page.
  2. Choose “View Your Service Schedule” or “See My Service Schedule.” Republic also exposes online account tools for schedule and service alerts.
  3. Enter the complete property address. Do not substitute ZIP code or a neighbor’s address.
  4. Save the normal collection weekday. Garbage and organics normally occur weekly on the property’s assigned route.
  5. Confirm whether recycling is Schedule A or Schedule B. If the screen does not clearly state it, call Republic at 916-635-2500.
  6. Open the official 2026 calendar PDF. Match A/B with the gray/green color of the collection week.
  7. Check for asterisk dates. The 2026 PDF uses an asterisk for no-service dates where later service in that week moves one day.
  8. Set an evening-before reminder. Carts must be curbside no later than 6 AM.
Phone script:
“I live at [full address] in Elk Grove. Please confirm my regular collection weekday and whether my recycling is Schedule A or Schedule B.”

Correct Elk Grove Cart Placement

  • Have carts out no later than 6:00 AM.
  • Place carts curbside, not on the sidewalk.
  • Face the lid opening toward the street.
  • Leave at least 3 feet between containers.
  • Leave at least 6 feet from cars, boats and other stationary objects.
  • Keep lids closed.
  • Do not hide carts behind parked vehicles.
  • Remove serviced carts within 24 hours.
Code-enforcement planning: do not leave carts or bulky material in the public right-of-way indefinitely. Retrieve carts promptly and follow the bulky appointment window below.

Current Elk Grove Solid Waste Rates — FY 2026–27

The City Council adopted Resolution 2026-119 setting FY2026–27 residential solid-waste rates. These rates apply beginning July 1, 2026.

Basic Monthly Residential Rate — One Garbage Cart

Garbage cart FY2025–26 FY2026–27 approved Increase
32 gallon $31.51 $32.46 $0.95
64 gallon $36.54 $37.64 $1.10
96 gallon $46.66 $48.06 $1.40

Other FY2026–27 Residential Service Charges

Service FY2026–27 approved amount When it matters
Contamination fee $8.83 Improper material contaminates a collection stream.
Additional recycling cart rental $2.75/month Resolution lists the rate, but City program language also says eligible households may receive up to three recycling carts without an additional collection charge. Confirm before ordering.
Additional organics cart rental $3.50/month Same caution: confirm included-cart eligibility before assuming a fee.
Cart exchange beyond one per year $32.12 Call Republic before requesting an exchange.
Destroyed / stolen cart replacement $78.97 Normal wear may be handled differently; call first.
4th+ bulky pickup — up to 5 cu. yd. $58.26 After the three included annual bulky appointments.
Each additional 5 cu. yd. bulky $35.04 Arrange excess before set-out.
Excess refuse — up to 3 bags $13.79 Arrange for the normal service day.
Excess refuse — 4+ bags, up to 5 cu. yd. $27.55 Call Republic instead of leaving unapproved overflow.
Drive-in vehicle service $11.37 Special service fee in adopted rate table.
Roll-out cart service $19.71 Do not confuse paid roll-out service with qualifying no-charge senior/disability assistance.
Service interruption application $68.17 Applies to eligible temporary service interruption requests.
Why older numbers still appear online: the City’s general Solid Waste Rates page still contains FY2025–26 tables in portions of the page while also showing the 2026 proposed-rate process. The FY2026–27 City Council resolution is the stronger source for rates effective July 1, 2026.

  4. Confirm the pickup date before placing material outside.
  5. Keep the load at or below the City’s stated 5-cubic-yard limit unless Republic makes separate arrangements.
  6. Do not set the pile out more than 24 hours before the scheduled day.
  7. Have all approved material ready by 6:00 AM.

Republic’s More Detailed Placement Rules

Approx. 1 ft from curb toward street 5 ft from cars / carts / objects Do not block sidewalk Keep drainage open 6 AM deadline

Republic’s bulky guide also tells residents to place appliances, TVs, monitors and computers about 1–2 feet from the main pile.

Do not pile early. City guidance warns that setting material out more than 24 hours before the appointment can lead to illegal-dumping problems — including other people adding material to your pile.

Tree Stumps — Confirm Before Set-Out

Republic’s 2025 bulky PDF says small tree stumps may be accepted when no more than approximately 16 inches in diameter and length, while City web guidance has used more restrictive stump language.

Best resident action: tell Republic the stump dimensions during appointment booking and do not place it outside until Republic confirms acceptance.

Oversized Piles

If a resident puts out more than 5 cubic yards without prior arrangements, crews may collect only the first 5 cubic yards and leave a Non-Collection Notice, or collect extra material and apply the appropriate fee.

Remove anything left behind promptly rather than leaving the remainder at curbside.

This is only a planning estimate. An irregular junk pile is not a perfect box and Republic makes the service decision.

5 cubic yards
Enter approximate pile dimensions.
Published dimensional inconsistency: the City also describes a rough 7 ft × 6 ft × 4 ft maximum envelope as equivalent to 5 cubic yards, even though a perfect rectangular calculation would be larger. Treat the stated 5-cubic-yard service maximum as controlling and stay comfortably below it.

Ask for the senior/disabled on-property or roll-out assistance program, and make clear that you are asking about the qualifying no-additional-charge assistance, not the separately priced standard roll-out service.

Door-to-Door HHW Assistance

Residents enrolled in the qualifying senior/disabled cart program can also become eligible for Elk Grove’s door-to-door hazardous-waste collection.

  1. Enroll with Republic’s senior/disabled cart service first.
  2. Then contact the City at 916-478-2228 for the HHW appointment.
  3. Prepare only accepted HHW in safe containers.
  4. Follow the City’s appointment instructions for placement near the home, not normal curbside cart placement.

Street Sweeping Is Separate From Trash Pickup

Elk Grove street sweeping is a City Operations & Maintenance service, not Republic trash collection.

Clean-Sweep Resident Checklist

  • Move vehicles by 6:00 AM on sweep day.
  • Do not rake leaves or yard waste into the street.
  • Put yard material in the green organics cart.
  • Move carts and basketball equipment out of the sweeper’s path.
  • Maintain adequate clearance for overhanging vegetation where required.
Useful local capacity benefit: the City’s street-sweeping guidance reminds residents that eligible households can request additional green-waste capacity and three bulky collections per year through Republic instead of leaving yard debris in the gutter.

Holiday Tree Recycling — Four Local Options

Elk Grove provides several free ways to recycle natural holiday trees.

Curbside

Use published seasonal curbside tree dates beside the green-waste cart.

Green Cart

Cut pieces small enough to fit completely with the lid closed.

Elder Creek

SWCC

Self-haul to 9255 Disposal Lane during facility hours.

Preparation

  • Remove tree stand.
  • Remove ornaments and lights.
  • Remove nails, tinsel and metal supports.
  • Cut trees taller than six feet into three-foot-or-shorter pieces.
  • Artificial trees are not accepted as natural holiday trees.
  • Flocked trees and rooted/live trees may have different disposal routes.
For the 2026–27 holiday season, recheck the City’s holiday-tree page after December 26 rather than relying only on prior January set-out dates.

Missed Elk Grove Trash, Recycling or Organics Pickup

  1. Confirm the normal weekday. Use Republic’s address-specific schedule.
  2. If it is recycling, confirm A/B. Check that this was actually the correct recycling week.

  4. Confirm the cart was outside by 6 AM.
  5. Check the three-foot / six-foot clearance.
  6. Check the lid and material. Contamination or blocked service is different from a missed route.

Useful call wording:

Official-Source Conflicts You Should Know About

Instead of hiding disagreements between live official pages, this guide identifies them and gives the safer resident action.

1
Republic customer-service hours differ Republic’s Elk Grove municipal page lists Monday–Friday 7 AM–5 PM. The City’s waste page lists Republic Monday–Friday 8 AM–5 PM.

Safer action: call during the shared 8 AM–5 PM window or use online account access.
2
SWCC menu option differs City HHW pages currently show 916-478-2228, Option 2, while Republic’s Elk Grove page has shown Option 4.

Safer action: call 916-478-2228 and follow the current recorded menu.
3
Elder Creek hours differ City residential-service and rate pages display different public hours.

Safer action: verify with Republic before driving.
4
Tree-stump guidance differs Republic’s bulk PDF permits certain very small stumps, while City guidance has been more restrictive.

Safer action: provide stump dimensions when booking and wait for Republic confirmation.
5
Older rate tables remain visible The City’s general rates page still displays FY2025–26 numbers in its long rate table.

Safer action: for service beginning July 1, 2026, use Resolution 2026-119’s FY2026–27 rate table.

Elk Grove Resident Action Plan

For the normal weekly schedule: open Republic’s Elk Grove page, enter the exact address, record the normal weekday and Schedule A/B, then use the official 2026 gray/green calendar.

For recycling: Schedule A uses gray weeks; Schedule B uses green weeks. Garbage and organics continue every week.

For cart placement: set carts out by 6 AM, leave three feet between carts and six feet from vehicles/objects.

For bulky waste: do not pile first. Contact Republic, confirm an available appointment, describe special items, stay under the five-cubic-yard normal limit and use the 24-hour set-out window.

Before paying someone to haul material away: check your three included bulky pickups, annual free dump, Elder Creek compost benefit, Compost Corner, monthly large-recyclables drop-off, Reuse Room, HHW service and tire events.

For a missed cart: confirm the address schedule, A/B week, holiday, 6 AM deadline and spacing before submitting the service issue to Republic.

Number 1 mistake: Plastic bags in the blue cart. They jam sorting machines and send entire truckloads to landfill. Take them to Kroger, Publix, or Target drop-off bins instead.
