Torrance residential collection is not a weekend service. The normal schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 7 AM to 5:30 PM. If you are new to Torrance, the first thing to confirm is whether your address is actually served by the City of Torrance Sanitation Division or by a private hauler.

The City specifically says it provides weekly trash, recycling, and organics collection for about 29,500 single-family homes, duplexes, and qualifying 3–4 unit properties. If you live in a larger apartment building, commercial building, HOA complex, or property not served by City carts, your collection may be handled by a licensed private hauler instead.

Need your exact pickup day? Use the official schedule map or call the Customer Service Center with your address before copying a neighbor’s cart day.

Open Collection Schedule

Local resident trap: “Torrance mailing address” does not always mean City of Torrance trash service. If a single-family residence is not receiving City trash service, the City notes the address may not be considered City of Torrance for refuse collection purposes. Confirm before scheduling large item pickup.

Resident Checklist

Torrance Pickup Morning Checklist — What I Would Check Before 7 AM

This is the practical checklist a Torrance resident needs before putting containers out. It focuses on the problems that actually cause missed pickup, code issues, refused large items, private-hauler confusion, and holiday-week mistakes.

For City-Served Homes
  • Confirm your Monday–Thursday pickup day.
  • Set carts out by 7 AM on collection day.
  • Do not put containers out earlier than 12 hours before collection.
  • Remove containers within 12 hours after collection.
  • Face lid openings toward the street.
  • Keep materials inside containers; ground material is not collected.
For Apartments, Condos and Multi-Family
  • Ask your property manager whether City service or a private hauler serves the property.
  • Businesses and most larger multi-family properties must use licensed private haulers.
  • Some 3–4 unit properties may qualify for City service if already in a City-served area.
  • Large item pickup may not apply if the property is not on City trash service.
  • Dumpster and roll-off rentals must come from a licensed private hauler.
  • Roll-offs placed on City property require an encroachment permit.
Night Before Do not set carts out earlier than 12 hours before pickup.
By 7 AM Containers must be at the curb or collection area.
After Service Bring containers back within 12 hours.
If Missed Check timing, holiday delay, blocked cart, wrong container, and then call 855-354-5623.
Cart Rules

Torrance Container Rules — 18-Inch Spacing, 3-Foot Clearance and 200-Pound Limit

The City’s curbside rules are very specific. Containers must be out by 7 AM, lid openings must face the street, materials must be inside containers, and items on the ground will not be collected. Containers also need enough spacing so the truck and crew can safely service them.

Do This
  • Place containers at the curb or collection area by 7 AM.
  • Face lid openings toward the street.
  • Leave about 18 inches of space between containers.
  • Keep containers at least 3 feet away from cars, lamp posts, fences and other obstructions.
  • Keep container and contents under 200 pounds.
  • Keep all trash, recycling and organics inside the correct container.
Avoid This
  • Do not place materials on the ground beside containers.
  • Do not block carts with parked cars.
  • Do not exceed the 200-pound limit.
  • Do not put hazardous waste, electronics, hot ashes or construction debris in the trash bin.
  • Do not leave containers out all week.
  • Do not use City large item pickup for materials that are prohibited.

Alley service note: Some residents with alley collection share a 300-gallon refuse container in the alley. The City instructs residents to remove gray and green bins from the alley and store them in their own yard until the next collection day.

Rates & Container Sizes

Torrance Trash Rates 2026 — 64-Gallon, 96-Gallon, Alley Service and Extra Containers

The City adopted annual refuse collection rate increases beginning July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2028. The monthly rate is based only on the size of the trash container, even though all three collection container types are available in 64- and 96-gallon sizes.

ServiceMonthly Rate as of July 1, 2026Resident Note
96-gallon refuse container$52.29Higher-capacity standard trash container.
64-gallon refuse container$49.14Lower monthly rate than 96-gallon.
Refuse alley service$49.14Shared 300-gallon alley container service.
Low income, senior, disabled 64-gallon$15.08Check eligibility before assuming the discount applies.
Additional 64-gallon refuse container$41.50Call Customer Service before requesting extra capacity.
Additional refuse container delivery fee$13.48Delivery fee listed separately.
Start of service fee$5.39Applies when starting service.
One Large Item Pick-Up per year, up to 20 items$0.00Available once per calendar year for eligible City-served addresses.
Additional LIPU, 10 items$40For extra pickup after free annual service.
Additional LIPU, 20 items$80For larger additional pickup after free annual service.

Capacity decision: If your trash container is constantly overflowing, compare the monthly difference between 64-gallon, 96-gallon and an additional container before using repeated extra services or leaving ground material that will not be collected.

Recycling

Torrance Recycling Pickup — Grey or Blue Bin Accepted Items and Contamination Mistakes

Torrance recycling uses grey or blue bins for plastics, glass, clean paper, cardboard and metal. Blue bins are available in 96-gallon size. The biggest resident mistake is treating recycling like a catch-all trash bin; dirty, food-soiled, wrong-number plastics and non-container glass can contaminate the load.

Accepted in Recycling
  • Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and office paper.
  • Corrugated cardboard and thinner cardboard such as cereal and cracker boxes.
  • Aluminum, tin and metal cans.
  • Empty aerosol cans and dry empty paint cans.
  • Plastic bottles, bags or containers labeled #1, #2 or #5.
  • Glass bottles and jars of any color.
Do Not Put in Recycling
  • Liquids, napkins, tissue paper or food-soiled items.
  • Photos, blueprint carbon or NCR paper.
  • Styrofoam peanuts and small foam pieces.
  • Plastics labeled #3, #4, #6 or #7.
  • Glass dishes, light bulbs, mirrors, ceramic cups, drinking glasses, plates, porcelain or window glass.
  • Pots, pans, propane or helium tanks, and construction scrap metal.

Shredded paper rule: Torrance says shredded paper must be placed in paper or recyclable plastic bags, then stapled/taped closed or tied closed. Do not dump loose shreds into the recycling bin.

Organics & Green Waste

Torrance Organics and Green Waste Pickup — Yard Waste, Food Scraps and Christmas Tree Rules

Torrance provides organics collection as part of residential service. Green/organics containers are collected on the assigned weekly collection day with the refuse and recycling containers. Place the container at the curb with the lid opening facing the street and keep material inside the cart.

Use the Organics / Green Waste Container For
  • Accepted green waste and organics under the City program.
  • Yard materials that fit in the container with the lid closed.
  • Christmas trees six feet or shorter, when placed directly in the green waste container during normal collection.
  • Unflocked Christmas trees prepared under the City’s seasonal instructions.
Do Not Confuse These
  • Flocked Christmas trees are not recyclable and must go in the black refuse container when cut up.
  • Large item pickup is not available during the Christmas tree recycling program.
  • Businesses and multi-family homes without Torrance City trash service should contact their private hauler for Christmas tree collection.
  • Materials placed outside the container may not be collected unless they are part of an official seasonal instruction.

Holiday-season planning: If you know you need large item pickup in late December or early January, schedule early. The City notes large item collection is not available during the Christmas tree recycling program, which usually starts after Christmas.

Large Item Pickup

Torrance Large Item Pickup — Free Once Per Year, 20-Item Limit and 12-Hour Set-Out Rule

Residents with City trash collection can request one free pickup of large or bulky items once per calendar year per address. Additional large item collection is available at a low cost. This program is not the same as dumping a sofa at the curb; it must be scheduled in advance.

1

Call before placing items out

Call the Customer Service Center at 855-354-5623. The City lists service hours as Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM for scheduling.

2

Use your scheduled refuse collection day

Your large item pickup is scheduled on your regular trash collection day. Do not place items out days early.

3

Keep within the item limit

The City will collect up to 20 items per pickup for the free annual service. Small items must be tied in or placed in bags.

4

Place items correctly

Place items where recycling is picked up, at least five feet away from trash and recycling containers. Items on private property will not be collected.

Common Large Item Examples
  • Furniture and large household items.
  • Mattresses, which are accepted in the City large item program and recycled through the Mattress Recycling Council.
  • Large mirrors, when prepared safely and labeled.
  • Appliances and metal items, depending on handling rules.
Prohibited Large Item Pickup Items
  • Construction debris such as wood, concrete, bricks, drywall, dirt and wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Auto parts such as batteries, doors, fenders, motors, gas tanks and tires.
  • Household hazardous waste such as paint, medicine, sharps, fluorescent tubes, bulbs, mercury equipment and electronic waste.
  • Items that cannot be safely handled by two people, such as spas, hot tubs, pianos and organs.

Fine-risk mistake: Torrance Municipal Code says materials cannot be placed for collection earlier than 12 hours before the scheduled pickup. Early large-item set-outs can look like illegal dumping, especially near apartments, alleys and HOA areas.

Holiday Delays

Torrance Holiday Trash Pickup Schedule 2026 — One-Day Delay Rules and What to Verify

Torrance Recycles explains the general holiday rule: if there is a holiday during the week, pickup is delayed by one day from the holiday through the rest of the week. If a holiday falls on Monday, Monday pickup moves to Tuesday, Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday and Thursday to Friday.

Do not confuse trash with street sweeping. Torrance Recycles notes street sweeping does not change during a holiday week. Trash collection can shift; street sweeping has its own holiday/parking enforcement rules.

Apartments & Private Haulers

Torrance Apartments, Businesses and Multi-Family Trash — City Service vs Private Hauler

This is where many residents get stuck. The City service does not automatically apply to every Torrance address. Businesses, commercial properties, and multi-family homes generally must receive trash services from a licensed private hauler.

Likely City-Service Properties
  • Single-family homes receiving City carts.
  • Duplexes receiving City service.
  • Qualifying 3–4 unit properties in areas already serviced by the City.
  • Alley-service homes using shared 300-gallon alley refuse containers.
Likely Private-Hauler Properties
  • Businesses and commercial properties.
  • Most larger multi-family buildings.
  • Apartment communities with dumpsters.
  • Townhome/HOA communities using contracted service.
  • Properties needing dumpster or roll-off rental.

Unsure whether your 3–4 unit property qualifies? The City says interested residents can call Public Works to see if they qualify for City service.

Call Public Works 310-781-6900

Move-out warning: If you live in an apartment, condo or HOA area, do not assume the City’s free annual large item pickup applies to your unit. Ask the property manager or hauler before placing a mattress, couch or desk by a dumpster.

Missed Pickup

Missed Trash Pickup Torrance CA — What to Check Before Reporting It

Before reporting a missed collection, check whether the issue is actually a service miss or a set-out problem. Torrance rules are strict enough that a blocked container, late cart, ground material, overweight container or holiday delay can all look like a missed pickup.

1

Confirm the correct pickup day

Use the schedule page or call Customer Service if your address is near a route boundary or if you are new to the property.

2

Check cart timing

Containers must be out by 7 AM and cannot be placed earlier than 12 hours before collection. Late placement is usually not a missed pickup.

3

Check spacing and weight

Leave about 18 inches between containers, keep them 3 feet from obstructions, and keep the container plus contents under 200 pounds.

4

Report the issue

For trash and recycling-related issues or requests, contact the Customer Service Center at 855-354-5623 or email TorranceCA@myUtilityDirect.com.
