Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Malden trash pickup day?

Malden trash pickup schedule garbage collection is address-based. Enter your home address on the City of Malden schedule and notifications page to see trash, recycling, yard waste, special collections and service disruptions. Weekly trash and recycling pickup is for residential dwellings with six units or fewer; buildings with more than six units and commercial properties need private pickup.

Trash must be curbside by 7:00 AM on pickup day. Malden uses a Pay As You Throw system: use official blue PAYT trash bags, or use standard household bags inside a City-issued black trash cart with a current annual Trash Tag.

Local mistake to avoid: Malden residents often confuse “blue bag” with recycling. The blue PAYT bag is for trash. Recycling goes loose in the blue recycling cart or another lidded recycling container with a recycling sticker. Do not bag recyclables inside a trash bag.

Resident Checklist

Malden Pickup Morning Checklist — What I Would Check Before 7:00 AM

If I lived in Malden, I would check four things before moving carts to the curb: whether it is my correct pickup day, whether the trash is in official blue bags or a tagged City cart, whether the lid is fully closed, and whether the material actually belongs in trash, recycling, yard waste or a special program.

For Houses and Small Residential Buildings
  • Put trash and recycling curbside by 7:00 AM.
  • Use official blue PAYT bags, or a current Trash Tag on a City black cart.
  • Keep trash inside a lidded barrel with the lid completely closed.
  • Put recycling loose in the blue cart or a marked lidded recycling container.
  • Check the address calendar for yard waste and special collection weeks.
  • Use Waste Wizard before placing electronics, white goods, bulk items or odd items out.
For Renters, Apartments and Multi-Unit Buildings
  • Ask whether the building has City collection or private pickup.
  • Buildings with more than six units must establish private pickup.
  • Ask the landlord whether they buy the annual Trash Tag or expect tenants to buy blue PAYT bags.
  • Do not place your trash on another property’s curb.
  • Ask how mattresses, bulk items, textiles and hazardous items are handled.
Trash Blue PAYT bags or current Trash Tag on City black cart.
Recycling Weekly, same day as trash, single stream, loose in cart.
Yard Waste Seasonal weeks, same trash day, paper bags or marked barrels.
Special Items Use Waste Wizard before placing mattresses, electronics or white goods.
PAYT System

Malden Pay As You Throw Trash Rules — Blue Bags, Black Carts and Closed Lids

Malden is a Pay As You Throw community, which means residents pay based on how much trash they dispose of. The system rewards households that recycle more and throw away less. For regular curbside trash, you generally have two official choices: blue PAYT bags or an annual Trash Tag on a City-issued black cart.

Option 1: Blue PAYT Bags
  • Use official City of Malden blue Pay As You Throw trash bags.
  • Blue PAYT bags can be placed in any lidded barrel.
  • This option is often useful if you produce only a small amount of trash.
  • You can buy PAYT bags at City Hall and listed local stores.
  • Do not use blue PAYT bags for recycling.
Option 2: Annual Trash Tag
  • Buy a current-year Trash Tag for a City-issued black cart.
  • Use standard household trash bags inside the tagged cart.
  • The tag is valid only on a City-issued 35-gallon black trash cart.
  • All trash must still be bagged; no loose trash.
  • The lid must close completely.

Reject-risk rule: A black cart without a current Trash Tag cannot simply be filled with ordinary household trash bags. If you do not have a valid Trash Tag, use official blue PAYT bags. If you do have a valid Trash Tag, you can use standard household bags inside that tagged City black cart.

Trash Tags

Malden Trash Tag 2026 — Cost, Where to Buy and How to Use It Correctly

The annual Trash Tag is designed for residents who want to reduce or avoid buying blue bags each week. Malden lists the annual Trash Tag at $75 per year, renewing each calendar year. If purchased in the middle of the year, the price may be prorated by the City.

1

Buy it online or in person

Trash Tags can be purchased online or at the City of Malden Treasurer’s Office at City Hall. In-person payment is listed as cash, check or money order only.

2

Put it on the correct cart

The sticker should go on the front of the City-issued black cart, just above the serial number. It is not valid on any random barrel or non-City cart.

3

Bag the trash inside the cart

Even with a Trash Tag, all trash must be bagged in standard household trash bags. Use standard 13-gallon kitchen bags or larger. Loose trash is not allowed.

4

Keep the lid closed and weight under limit

The lid must close completely, the cart cannot be overstuffed, and total trash must not exceed 35 pounds.

Need blue PAYT bags? The City lists stores such as Malden City Hall Treasurer’s Office, CVS locations, Stop & Shop, Walgreens, Oak Grove Variety, Snap Mart and other local retailers.

Recycling

Malden Recycling Pickup — Weekly Same-Day Single Stream Recycling

Malden recycling is collected weekly on the same day as trash collection. It is single stream, which means accepted curbside recyclables can be mixed together in one cart. Recycling should be placed in the blue City-issued wheeled recycling cart or another standard covered recycling barrel with a special recycling label sticker.

Recycling Setup
  • Recycling is picked up weekly on the same day as trash.
  • Use the blue City-issued recycling cart when available.
  • You may use another lidded container with a recycling sticker.
  • Recycle accepted items loose; do not bag recyclables in trash bags.
  • Extra blue City-issued recycling carts can be purchased online or through DPW.
Common Recycling Mistakes
  • Putting recycling in plastic trash bags.
  • Mixing food waste, liquids or household trash into recycling.
  • Using the official blue PAYT trash bag for recyclables.
  • Putting electronics, hazardous waste or textiles in the blue cart.
  • Leaving recycling loose on the sidewalk without a proper container.

Extra recycling tip: If you fill your blue cart every week, do not create an open pile. Use an additional covered recycling container with a free recycling sticker from City Hall or DPW, or purchase an extra blue City-issued recycling cart.

Yard Waste

Malden Yard Waste Pickup — Seasonal Weeks, Paper Bags and Marked Barrels

Yard waste is collected seasonally from spring through fall on designated weeks, on your regular trash day. Use the address-based schedule to confirm the exact dates for your street. Do not assume every trash day is a yard waste day.

Yard Waste TypeMalden RuleResident Note
Leaves and grass clippingsAcceptedUse brown paper yard waste bags or barrels marked “yard waste.”
TwigsAcceptedKeep separated from regular trash.
BranchesNot accepted curbside as yard wasteMalden’s yard waste page says no branches are picked up in this stream.
LogsNot acceptedDo not leave heavy logs with yard waste bags.
DirtNot acceptedDirt makes bags/barrels too heavy and is specifically excluded.

Seasonal drop-off note: Malden lists yard waste drop-off hours at the DPW Yard during seasonal periods, but the page also shows construction-related notices. Check the official yard waste page before loading your car, especially during DPW Yard construction or temporary closures.

Mattresses & Large Items

Malden Mattress, Box Spring and Bulk Item Rules — Do Not Put Mattresses in Regular Trash

Mattresses and box springs are not handled like ordinary bulk trash in Malden. Because of Massachusetts DEP rules, mattresses and box springs are prohibited from being thrown away in the waste stream. Malden tells residents to use authorized mattress recycling vendors instead of the normal bulk item policy.

Mattress / Box Spring Path
  • Do not place mattresses or box springs in regular trash.
  • Do not expect them to be collected under normal bulk trash rules.
  • Use an authorized vendor listed by the City.
  • Vendors may offer curbside pickup, in-home pickup or online booking.
  • Shop around because vendors and pricing can differ.
Other Large Items
  • Use Waste Wizard before setting out electronics, white goods or bulk items.
  • Some items may require special handling or fees.
  • Do not place hazardous waste, CRT screens, tires or electronics in regular trash.
  • When unsure, call DPW before placing large items curbside.

Before dragging a mattress outside: Open the City’s mattress and box spring recycling page or call DPW. Unauthorized disposal is prohibited.

Hazardous Waste

Malden Hazardous Waste Days — Paint, Tires, Oil, CRTs and Cash-Only Fees

Malden holds hazardous waste recycling days seasonally through the Department of Public Works. These are not everyday drop-off services, and the City page should be checked for current dates before bringing materials to the DPW Yard at 356 Commercial Street.

Materials Listed for Hazardous Waste Days
  • Motor oil.
  • Used oil filters.
  • Oil paints, stains and varnishes.
  • Automotive batteries.
  • CRT televisions and computer monitors.
  • Fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Nickel cadmium batteries.
  • Tires and electronic waste.
Important Fee Notes
  • Fees are listed by material type.
  • Payment is cash only.
  • Paint is accepted only until 1:00 PM on collection days.
  • Latex paint is not accepted in the oil-paint category.
  • No upcoming hazardous waste day may be scheduled at certain times, so check the calendar first.

Do not gamble with hazardous waste: If you have oil paint, tires, batteries, CRT screens, fluorescent bulbs or electronic waste, check the Hazardous Waste Collection Days page first. Putting these items in regular trash can create rejection, safety and environmental problems.

Apartments & Private Pickup

Malden Apartment Trash Pickup — Six-Unit Rule, Landlord Questions and Private Collection

Malden’s weekly trash and recycling pickup is provided for residential dwellings with six units or fewer. More than six units and commercial properties must establish private pickup. That matters because many renters search for “Malden trash day” but live in a building where the landlord, condo association or private hauler controls the schedule.

Ask Your Landlord or Property Manager
  • Does this building have City collection or private pickup?
  • Who buys the annual Trash Tag or blue PAYT bags?
  • Where are the City-issued black trash carts and blue recycling carts?
  • Are tenants allowed to use the City curb, or must trash go in a private dumpster?
  • How are mattresses, box springs, electronics and bulk items handled?
Renter Mistakes to Avoid
  • Do not put ordinary trash bags in an untagged black City cart.
  • Do not put recycling in blue PAYT trash bags.
  • Do not use a neighbor’s cart or another building’s dumpster.
  • Do not leave mattresses outside without using an authorized recycling vendor.
  • Do not assume your lease automatically includes PAYT bag costs.

New renter shortcut: On move-in day, ask for the trash setup in writing: pickup day, blue bag vs Trash Tag, where carts are stored, recycling container location, and how large items are handled. This prevents the classic first-week missed pickup problem.

Troubleshooting

Missed Trash Pickup Malden — What to Check Before You Report It

Before reporting a missed pickup, separate true collection failure from preparation problems. If your trash was in a wrong bag, an untagged cart, a cart with an open lid, a non-City cart with ordinary bags, or a material that belongs in Waste Wizard, the solution is different from a missed route.

1

Confirm the schedule

Use the address-based schedule page to verify your trash, recycling and yard waste day, especially after holidays, storms or service disruptions.

2

Check the trash payment method

Was the trash in official blue PAYT bags, or inside a City-issued black cart with a current Trash Tag? If not, it may have been rejected correctly.

3

Check lid, weight and material type

The lid must close completely. A tagged City cart should not exceed 35 pounds. Mattresses, hazardous waste, CRTs, tires, oil and certain bulk items need special handling.

4

Report the issue

Use the official SeeClickFix missed pickup link or call Malden DPW at 781-397-7160. Have your address, pickup day and material type ready.

Number 1 mistake: Plastic bags in the blue cart. They jam sorting machines and send entire truckloads to landfill. Take them to Kroger, Publix, or Target drop-off bins instead.
