Folsom Bin Colors Explained — Gray Trash, Blue Recycling and Green Organics

Folsom uses a color-coded residential container system. The color matters because the City conducts route reviews and may leave real-time feedback tags when visible contamination appears in recycling or organics containers.

Bin ColorServiceFrequencyMain Rule
GrayGarbage / landfill trashWeeklyUse for non-recyclable and non-organic waste.
BlueRecyclingEvery other weekUse for accepted recyclables only; keep items clean and dry.
GreenOrganics / yard waste / bagged food scrapsWeeklyLoose yard debris plus bagged food scraps and food-soiled paper.

New resident warning: Blue recycling is not weekly, even though gray trash and green organics are weekly. Use the app or calendar so you do not leave the blue bin out on the wrong week.

Blue Bin

Folsom Recycling Pickup — Every Other Week and Contamination Rules

Folsom blue recycling bins are picked up every other week. The City asks residents to recycle right because contaminated carts can increase processing costs, lower material quality, and sometimes cause loads to be rejected.

Blue Bin Approved
  • Plastic bottles and containers with no loose caps, lids or straws.
  • Glass jars and bottles with no loose caps, lids or straws.
  • Tin, steel and aluminum cans.
  • Clean aluminum foil.
  • White and colored paper, junk mail, envelopes and newspaper.
  • Magazines, catalogs, phone books and paperback books.
  • Clean cardboard that is flattened and not plastic or wax coated.
Not Blue Bin Approved
  • Plastic bags, plastic wrap, film and bubble wrap.
  • Styrofoam / expanded polystyrene.
  • Plastic utensils and cutlery.
  • Food-soiled paper or cardboard, including greasy pizza boxes.
  • Shredded paper; bag it and place it in the trash.
  • Wax or plastic-coated cartons and aseptic boxes.
  • Mirrors, windows, ceramics, clothing, shoes and tanglers.

Folsom recycling shortcut: Clean cardboard belongs in recycling, but cardboard is no longer accepted in the bulky item pickup program. If you have extra clean flattened cardboard, use a recycling drop-off location instead of bulky pickup.

  • Bagged food-soiled paper.

Missed Pickup

Missed Pickup in Folsom — What to Check Before Calling or Emailing

If your Folsom cart was not collected, check the basic service rules before reporting. Many misses are caused by wrong recycling week, late set-out, blocked carts, contamination, overfilled cans, or an unconfirmed bulky/HHW appointment.

1

Confirm the right stream and week

Gray trash and green organics are weekly. Blue recycling is every other week, so check the app before reporting a missed blue bin.

2

Check the 6 a.m. deadline

If the container was placed out after the truck passed, it may not count as a missed pickup.

3

Look for an “Oops” or route review tag

Folsom conducts route reviews to educate residents about recycling and organics contamination. Follow the tag instructions before the next service.

Number 1 mistake: Plastic bags in the blue cart. They jam sorting machines and send entire truckloads to landfill. Take them to Kroger, Publix, or Target drop-off bins instead.
