3. Check whether this week is garbage, recycling, compost or glass.

Know the cart pattern

• Green compostables cart: collected weekly.
• Blue recycling cart: collected every second week.
• Grey garbage cart: collected every second week on the alternating week.
• Grey glass bin: collected manually every two weeks with recycling.
• Service alerts: check the app and City updates during weather or holidays.

Cart sizes and requests

• Cart sizes include 120 L, 240 L and 360 L options.
• Property owners can request cart size changes.
• Only the property owner can submit a cart exchange request.
• Renters should ask the landlord to contact the City.
• Second carts are not available for recycling or garbage.
• A second compost cart may be requested where needed.

Set-out mistakes to avoid

• Do not leave extra loose bags at the curb.
• Keep material contained inside carts with lids closed.
• Do not bag recyclables in the blue cart.
• Do not hide carts behind parked cars or obstacles.
• Do not use the wrong week for garbage or recycling.
• Do not place broken glass in the grey glass bin.

If a sticker was left

The sticker usually explains the issue, such as spacing, bagged recyclables, extra material, plastic in compost, contamination, wrong week or bear-resistant cart clip problems. Correct the problem and place the cart back out on the next scheduled collection day.

If no sticker was left

Report the missed collection through the Abbotsford City Services app, submit a request for service, or call 604-864-5640 and choose option 1.

Blue cart best practices

• Place recyclables loose in the cart.
• Do not bag recyclables.
• Break down and flatten cardboard and boxes.

• Empty glass bottles.
• Empty glass jars.

• Broken glass.
• Lids.
• Plastic bags.
• Light bulbs or light fixtures.
• Dishes, cookware and ceramics.
• Drinking glasses, windows and mirrors.

Yard waste coupon basics

• Available for Abbotsford residents currently receiving City curbside service.
• Proof of residence is required.
• One coupon is valid for one free yard waste drop-off.
• Maximum load is equivalent to one 5×8 foot utility trailer, up to one tonne.
• Coupon must be paper; electronic copies or photocopies are not accepted.

If you rent a house or duplex

• Ask the landlord which cart sizes are assigned to the property.
• Use the City schedule lookup for the service address.
• If a cart exchange is needed, the property owner must contact the City.
• Set reminders so alternating recycling/garbage weeks are not missed.

If you live in an apartment or strata

• Ask the building manager where garbage, recycling and organics go.
• Do not copy single-family cart rules if your building uses shared bins.
• Ask before leaving furniture, mattresses or move-out waste.
