San Diego Trash Pickup Today: Schedule, Delays & Holiday

✓ San Diego residential collection guide • Updated August 2026

Find the Right San Diego Pickup Date Before Moving Any Bin

City-serviced homes receive weekly gray-bin trash, weekly green-bin organics and every-other-week light-blue recycling, but the exact weekday and recycling week depend on the service address.

This guide shows how to verify today or tomorrow, separate City service from EDCO, apply holiday delays, avoid gray-bin rejection, report a missed route and choose a legal bulky-item or hazardous-waste option.

Independent resident guide—not the City of San Diego, EDCO or another waste hauler.

San Diego Trash Pickup Today: Quick Answer

There is no single citywide pickup answer. First identify the hauler, then search the exact service address. City-serviced trash and organics run weekly, while recycling runs every other week. All City carts must be placed at the curb or alley by 6:00 a.m.

When today is the confirmed address date, allow City collection until about 5:30 p.m. Before reporting a delay, check the holiday rule, current service-status page, impacted-area map and cart placement.

Since July 1, 2026, City crews collect household trash only from an official City-provided gray bin assigned to the property. An old black bin, privately purchased gray cart or repainted black cart is not eligible.

Is There Trash Pickup Today or Tomorrow in San Diego?

The correct answer requires four facts: the service provider, the full address, the normal weekday and whether the selected service is weekly or biweekly. This helper does not perform a live official search; it sends you to the correct action.

Select the provider and question. The helper will explain which official lookup or action you need.
Recycling warning: A correct weekday does not prove that recycling runs today. City recycling remains every other week, so the address detail page or downloadable calendar must confirm the active week.

First Identify City, EDCO or Another Hauler

Many San Diego addresses are inside city limits but are not collected by City Environmental Services. Apartments, condos, HOAs, gated properties, businesses and some residences may use a franchised private company.

🏛️

City Environmental Services

Use the City address lookup when the property has City-assigned gray, light-blue and green containers and qualifies for municipal collection.

🚛

EDCO

Use EDCO’s address lookup, holiday table and bulky-item scheduling. City holiday notices do not automatically apply.

🏢

Other private hauler

Check the cart, dumpster, bill, lease or property notice for the company name. Contact property management when the account is shared.

Fast provider test: If the City schedule map does not show the address, try the map pin. If the address still does not appear and the property has an HOA or multiple units, private service is likely.

Find the San Diego Trash Schedule by Address or Map

The official City tool shows the next trash, recyclables and organics dates. It also provides a detail page that can be bookmarked and a downloadable recycling calendar.

  1. Open the official City collection map. Use it only for properties that receive City Environmental Services collection.
  2. Enter the street number and street name. Select the matching suggested property rather than relying on a ZIP code.
  3. Use the map pin when the address is not recognized. City records can format an address differently from postal records.
  4. Record three dates separately. Save the next gray-bin trash, green-bin organics and light-blue recycling dates.
  5. Bookmark the detail page. This is the fastest future answer for “today” and “tomorrow” searches.
  6. Report incorrect route data. Call 858-694-7000 when the official result appears wrong.

After understanding the lookup steps, use the official tool for the address-specific answer.

What the Official 2026 Curbsider PDF Adds

The City’s one-page 2026 Curbsider calendar reinforces several rules that are easy to miss on a basic schedule page.

📅

Different route classes

The PDF is issued by calendar class. Do not use another resident’s printed recycling pattern unless the address has the same official calendar.

♻️

Loose recycling only

The PDF tells residents not to bag recyclables and to keep the collection-bin lid closed.

📱

Get It Done actions

Missed pickup, container orders, illegal dumping and ADA-assisted collection are directed through Get It Done.

Calendar-use rule: Download the calendar from your own address detail page. The general PDF’s color coding should not be applied to an address unless the correct calendar class is confirmed.

The official PDF is useful after the address lookup because it provides a printable year view.

Gray Trash Bin Required for City Pickup

Beginning July 1, 2026, City crews stopped emptying the older black trash containers. The eligible trash container is a City-provided gray bin carrying a unique serial number assigned to the service property.

Eligible gray bin

An official City-issued gray trash cart assigned to that property.

Not eligible

An old black cart, privately purchased gray bin or a black bin painted gray.

🔑

Who can change service?

Only the homeowner or property manager can request a different size, replacement or additional cart.

I Still Have a City-Owned Black Bin

Request removal through Get It Done, call 858-694-7000, or take an empty City-owned black bin to 8353 Miramar Place. That location is drop-off only: it does not exchange containers or issue a new gray cart onsite.

My Gray Bin Is Missing or Damaged

Use the Waste Portal or Get It Done to request repair or replacement. The City states that repair, replacement and delivery are covered without an additional container-service charge for eligible customers.

Light-Blue Recycling Bin Delivery

The June 2026 City release stated that the lighter-blue recycling-cart rollout was more than halfway complete and expected to finish in September 2026. Use the City’s container-delivery lookup instead of assuming a missed route when a new cart has not yet arrived.

Cart Placement Rules That Prevent a Miss

Rule Correct resident action
Deadline Place carts at the curb or alley by 6:00 a.m. on the confirmed collection date.
Cart direction Position wheels against the curb and the handle facing the home.
Side clearance Leave at least three feet from other carts, vehicles, trees, posts and mailboxes.
Overhead clearance Keep carts away from branches, wires, basketball hoops and other overhead obstacles.
Lid and loading Do not overload the cart. Keep the lid closed and large objects inside the rim.
Loose trash Bag or wrap loose refuse before placing it in the gray cart.

Ready for collection

  • Correct assigned cart.
  • Out before 6:00 a.m.
  • Three feet of clearance.
  • Lid fully closed.
  • No vehicle blocking the lift arm.
  • No prohibited waste.

Likely collection problem

  • Wrong cart or unassigned container.
  • Cart placed after the route passed.
  • Overflowing lid.
  • Cart against a car, pole or tree.
  • Furniture beside the cart.
  • Battery, chemical or construction waste inside.

San Diego Recycling Schedule Today

City recycling is collected every other week. A recurring weekday reminder is not enough because the address also has an alternating calendar class.

  1. Confirm the property’s collection weekday. Search the full address rather than relying on the neighborhood.
  2. Check the next light-blue recycling date. The address result tells you whether this is the active week.
  3. Download the address-specific calendar. Save alternating recycling dates to a phone calendar.
  4. Apply holiday delays. A City-observed holiday can move the recycling date one day later.

Prepare the Light-Blue Bin Correctly

♻️

Better preparation

  • Keep accepted recyclables dry.
  • Place items loose in the cart.
  • Empty food and liquid.
  • Flatten cardboard when practical.
  • Keep the lid closed.
🚫

Keep these out

  • Plastic bags and film.
  • Batteries and electronics.
  • Food and liquid.
  • Hoses, cords and wires.
  • Diapers and paper towels.
  • Compostable plastic.
Weekly recycling is paused: The City’s planned conversion from biweekly to weekly recycling is paused until further notice. Continue using the every-other-week calendar.

Green-Bin Organics Pickup and Odor Control

Green-bin collection is weekly. Accepted material includes food scraps, food-soiled paper and qualifying yard waste. Plastic bags are prohibited even when labeled compostable.

🥕

Food scraps

Place accepted food directly in the green cart or collect it first in an uncoated paper bag.

🍕

Food-soiled paper

Use the organics cart for accepted paper contaminated with food and unsuitable for clean recycling.

🌿

Yard material

Layer food scraps with yard material when possible to reduce moisture, pests and odor.

Cleaner-bin routine: Use a paper bag for food scraps, freeze especially odorous material until collection eve, layer food with dry yard waste and keep the lid closed.

San Diego Trash Collection Holidays 2026

City trash, recycling and organics are suspended on five observed holidays. Beginning with the holiday, the remaining City routes that week move one day later.

Holiday 2026 date Affected City routes Shift
New Year’s Day Thursday, January 1 Thursday and Friday Thursday → Friday; Friday → Saturday.
Memorial Day Monday, May 25 Monday through Friday Every remaining route moves one day later.
Labor Day Monday, September 7 Monday through Friday Every remaining route moves one day later.
Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 26 Thursday and Friday Thursday → Friday; Friday → Saturday.
Christmas Day Friday, December 25 Friday Friday → Saturday.
July 4 clarification: Independence Day fell on Saturday in 2026. City curbside collection ran normally on Friday, July 3, while Miramar facilities closed Saturday, July 4.

Holidays That Do Not Automatically Delay City Collection

Do not assume every government-office closure changes curbside service. The five holidays above are the collection-delay holidays published on the City’s 2026 collection page. Use a current City holiday notice when another observance causes confusion.

Confirm the Official Holiday Schedule

EDCO Holiday Schedule and Bulky Pickup

EDCO uses a separate residential address lookup and a separate San Diego County holiday rule. A weekday holiday delays service on or after the holiday; a Saturday holiday does not delay the weekday schedule.

EDCO holiday 2026 date Published impact
New Year’s Day Thursday, January 1 One-day delay for Thursday and Friday customers.
Memorial Day Monday, May 25 One-day delay for the remainder of the week.
Independence Day Saturday, July 4 No service delay.
Labor Day Monday, September 7 One-day delay for the remainder of the week.
Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 26 One-day delay for Thursday and Friday customers.
Christmas Day Friday, December 25 One-day delay for Friday customers.

EDCO Bulky Item Pickup

EDCO offers scheduled bulky-item collection for a nominal fee. Items must be placed at the curb or driveway end by 6:00 a.m. on the confirmed appointment day, and a separate truck performs the pickup.

EDCO lists as acceptable

  • Furniture.
  • Scrap metal.
  • Stoves and microwave ovens.
  • Refrigerators and air conditioners.
  • Water heaters.
  • One television or computer monitor.
🚫

EDCO lists as unacceptable

  • Tires.
  • Dirt.
  • Concrete and asphalt.
  • Paints, solvents and pesticides.
  • Other liquid or hazardous waste.

Is Trash Pickup Delayed This Week in San Diego?

Use this troubleshooting ladder instead of assuming that every unemptied cart is a citywide delay.

  1. Verify the provider. City, EDCO and other private schedules are not interchangeable.
  2. Confirm the address date. A wrong weekday or inactive recycling week is not a service delay.
  3. Apply the correct holiday rule. Determine whether the route moved to the next day.
  4. Check the City status page or private-hauler alert. The City status can show normal operations while identifying certain impacted areas.
  5. Inspect the street. Many full carts suggest a route delay; neighboring emptied carts suggest an individual placement or eligibility problem.
  6. Allow service until 5:30 p.m. A truck may arrive later than its usual neighborhood time.
Weather and access: Flooding, road work, parked vehicles, construction, tree limbs or emergency activity can affect one street without changing the citywide schedule.

How to Report a Missed San Diego Collection

  1. Wait until after the normal route window. City collection can continue until approximately 5:30 p.m.
  2. Recheck the address schedule. Confirm trash, organics or the active recycling week.
  3. Check the holiday shift. Verify whether the service moved to tomorrow or Saturday.
  4. Inspect the cart. Confirm correct color, City assignment, 6:00 a.m. placement, clearance and closed lid.
  5. Check the impacted-area map. Do not create a duplicate request when the City already lists the route as delayed.
  6. Submit a missed-collection report. Use Get It Done or call Environmental Services.
  7. Keep the cart accessible. Leave it correctly positioned while waiting for return service unless instructed otherwise.
📝

Prepare these details

  • Full address.
  • Cart type and color.
  • Scheduled date.
  • Time placed outside.
  • Whether neighboring carts were collected.
  • A clear placement photo.
🗣️

Useful report wording

“My [gray trash/light-blue recycling/green organics] cart at [address] was outside before 6:00 a.m. on the confirmed collection date. The lid was closed and the cart had three feet of clearance. Nearby carts were [collected/not collected].”

Mission Beach Summer Trash Service 2026

A City announcement added Saturday collection of gray trash bins in Mission Beach from May 30 through September 5, 2026, in addition to the neighborhood’s usual Tuesday pickup. The extra service was tied to heavier summer activity and was not a citywide Saturday program.

Mission Beach only: Confirm that the property is on the eligible route before using Saturday service. Recycling and organics rules should still be checked through the address lookup.

City of San Diego Bulky Item Pickup Schedule

The City does not currently operate a normal residential bulky-item curbside schedule. The planned City program is paused until further notice along with planned weekly recycling.

Do not leave furniture beside the cart. Couches, appliances, automotive parts, construction debris and items over 50 pounds are prohibited from ordinary gray-bin collection.

Choose the Bulky-Item Path by Material

Item Do not do this Better starting option
Mattress or box spring Do not leave it beside a City cart. Use the free Miramar Mattress Collection Site when eligible.
Couch, chair or table Do not expect City curbside pickup. Donate, search WasteFreeSD, self-haul or arrange licensed private pickup.
Refrigerator or air conditioner Do not put it in household trash. Use retailer haul-away or an appliance recycler that handles refrigerant.
TV or computer Do not use trash or curbside recycling. Use the Miramar Recycling Center or another approved electronics recycler.
Carpet, concrete or remodeling debris Do not load it into the gray cart. Use an approved transfer, landfill or construction-debris facility.
EDCO customer’s furniture Do not follow City bulky-item information. Contact EDCO and schedule its fee-based service.

Household Hazardous Waste Appointment

Paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, batteries, fluorescent lamps, propane cylinders and similar hazardous material must not enter trash, recycling, a drain or the landfill disposal stream.

🚗

Before driving

  • Make an appointment.

San Diego Solid Waste Fees Effective July 1, 2026

The FY2027 monthly base bundle depends on the size of the gray trash cart. Each listed bundle includes one trash cart, one 95-gallon recycling cart and one 95-gallon organics cart.

Base bundle FY2027 monthly fee Important detail
35-gallon gray trash cart $33.66 Lower rate begins when the smaller cart is delivered.
65-gallon gray trash cart $39.86 Lower rate begins when the smaller cart is delivered.
95-gallon gray trash cart $44.57 Standard one-trash, one-recycling and one-organics bundle.

FY2027 Additional Container Fees

Additional container Monthly fee
35-gallon trash $6.98
65-gallon trash $13.23
95-gallon trash $18.01
95-gallon recycling $11.11
95-gallon organics $12.71

How the Fee Is Collected

The City intends to collect the solid-waste charge through the County property-tax roll. The base rate is determined by the selected gray trash-cart size, while smaller recycling or organics carts do not reduce their portion of the bundle price.

Service-Level Changes

Beginning July 1, 2026, customers are generally limited to one service-level change per fiscal year, running July 1 through June 30. Homeowners and property managers can use the Waste Portal or call customer service.

Financial Assistance

Qualifying property owners can apply through the City’s MAAC partnership. FY2027 applications are first-come, first-served, subject to funding, with an April 30, 2027 deadline.

City Eligibility, New Homes, Renters and Private Service

Check Eligibility With the APN

The City’s eligibility workflow uses the property’s 10-digit Assessor’s Parcel Number. Eligible property owners can then create a Waste Portal account and manage the service package.

  1. Find the property APN. Use the property record or official assessor lookup.
  2. Enter the 10-digit APN in the City eligibility tool. Do not assume eligibility from the mailing address.
  3. Create a Waste Portal account when eligible. Review cart sizes, delivery records, fees and service requests.
  4. Arrange private service when ineligible. Use a City-approved franchise hauler rather than unassigned City carts.

Newly Built Homes

A newly built residence may qualify for City service or may require private hauling. Eligible new homes normally receive a 95-gallon gray trash cart, 95-gallon recycling cart and 95-gallon organics cart unless the owner changes the service level.

Renters

A renter should report missing or incorrect carts to the landlord or property manager. Only an owner or manager can request a cart-size, color or quantity change.

Apartments, Condos and HOAs

Shared-dumpster and private-hauler properties should obtain the provider name, normal collection days, contamination rules, overflow procedure and bulky-item process from management.

Check City Collection Eligibility

ADA Assisted Collection

Residents unable to move carts to the collection point can submit an ADA-assisted collection request through Get It Done. The request asks the resident to confirm that no able-bodied person is available to place the automated container for collection.

Use only the assigned City gray trash cart, place all eligible carts correctly by 6:00 a.m. and allow collection until approximately 5:30 p.m.

During a holiday week, apply the provider-specific delay. When service appears late, check the impacted-area map before submitting a missed-collection request.

Do not leave furniture or hazardous waste curbside. Choose mattress recycling, WasteFreeSD, an EDCO appointment, Miramar facilities or another approved option based on the material.
