Columbus GA Trash Pickup Schedule 2026: Exact Route, Holidays, Bulk, Recycling & Local Help

Columbus does not use one citywide trash day. City-serviced residential properties are divided among normal Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday routes.

This guide goes beyond the route colors: it explains exactly which official tool to open, what to click after opening it, how to submit a 311 request, when holiday routes move to Wednesday, what costs extra, where to take special waste, and which Columbus-specific savings and assistance programs may reduce household costs.

Columbus GA Trash Pickup: Answer in 60 Seconds

Who collects it? Columbus Consolidated Government Public Works — Integrated Waste.

What day? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the complete service address. Use the official route map and then confirm the address in the Columbus GA Recycles app.

What time? Put the household garbage cart curbside before 7:00 AM. Keep automated carts at least 3 feet from other carts, cars, mailboxes and similar obstacles.

What is collected weekly? Household garbage, curbside recycling and yard waste are generally aligned with the property’s normal route day.

Furniture or a large pile? Create a 311 request first. Large appliances, furniture and large yard piles are not something to leave unscheduled and hope a crew takes.

Missed collection? If the correct eligible cart was outside on time, properly placed and the City missed it through City fault, call 706-653-4000 / 311 or submit the official online request.

⚠️ Important location distinction: this page covers Columbus, Georgia / Muscogee County. Columbus, Ohio uses a completely different sanitation department, route system and calendar.

How to Find Your Exact Columbus Georgia Trash Day by Address

The most reliable resident workflow uses two official sources together: first the map to understand the route zone, then Columbus GA Recycles to confirm the complete address and upcoming dates.

  1. Write down the complete service address. Include the house number and street name. ZIP code alone cannot safely identify a route boundary.
  2. Open the official Waste Management Pick Up Days map. Locate the address and identify its color.
  3. Translate the color. Blue = Monday, green = Tuesday, purple = Thursday, peach = Friday.
  4. Open Columbus GA Recycles. Enter the same complete address.
  5. Compare the result. The app should be used to view upcoming garbage, recycling, yard and bulk information for the selected address.
  6. Check the holiday schedule. A normal Monday/Thursday/Friday can move to Wednesday during certain holiday weeks.
  7. If the map and address result appear inconsistent, stop guessing. Contact 311 or the City’s Waste Pickup Routes GIS contact at 706-225-4770.
Best question to ask if calling: “Can you confirm the normal garbage, recycling and yard-waste route day for my complete service address, and whether an upcoming holiday changes it?”

Public Works also publishes the four-zone route map in PDF format. The PDF is useful when zooming into street boundaries or printing the route map.

After opening the PDF: zoom into the service street, identify the route color, note the weekday, and then verify the complete address in Columbus GA Recycles. Open the official route PDF in a new tab.

2026 Columbus Route Date & Holiday Checker

This resident tool applies the officially published 2026 holiday make-up dates to a route you have already confirmed. It does not identify your address and does not provide live truck status.

Check a Planned Collection Date

Confirm your route with the official map/app first, then select the route above.

Columbus GA Collection Frequency by Waste Stream

What the same route day does—and does not—mean for different waste streams.
Waste stream Typical service Container / preparation Extra action?
Household garbage Weekly on normal route day City black cart or authorized brown second cart Routine household waste must be inside cart.
Recycling Weekly, aligned with garbage route day Loose accepted materials in blue cart No plastic bags in cart.
Yard waste Weekly, aligned with household route Eligible leaves/grass/etc. in green cart Large piles require 311 scheduling.
Eligible pruning limbs Route-based collection Separate plant material; each limb max 4 ft long / 6 in diameter Large pile may require 311.
Furniture / appliances Scheduled bulk collection Separate pile 311 request required.
Tree cut down on private property Separate paid Tree for Fee program Authorization required Not normal weekly collection.
Construction / demolition Not curbside bulk Landfill / responsible contractor Do not place with municipal bulk.
Important: “same route day” does not guarantee that garbage, recycling, yard waste and a scheduled bulk stop will be collected at the same moment or by the same truck. The 2024 collection-policy update specifically notes that a scheduled pickup may occur on the household day or another scheduled day.

Columbus GA Trash Set-Out Time & Automated Cart Placement

Before 7 AM

Household garbage should be curbside before 7:00 AM on the collection day.

↔️

At Least 3 Feet

Keep automated carts at least 3 feet from other carts, vehicles, mailboxes and similar obstacles.

🚛

No Late Return

Public Works warns that crews can arrive early and cannot return for material placed out after the crew has already passed.

Blue recycling cart orientation: current Public Works guidance says to place the wheels toward the curb and the handles toward the house while maintaining approximately 3 feet of clearance.

Columbus GA Household Garbage Rules

The City’s current automated collection policy requires normal household garbage to be contained in a City-issued black cart or an authorized brown second household-waste cart.

What to Do

  • Put routine household garbage inside the authorized cart.
  • Set the cart curbside before 7 AM.
  • Keep at least 3 feet of clearance.
  • Make sure collection equipment can reach the cart.
  • Use an authorized second brown cart if you regularly need more capacity.

What Can Cause a Problem

  • Routine bags or boxes left beside the cart.
  • Household garbage placed in the green yard cart.
  • A cart blocked by a parked vehicle or mailbox.
  • Construction material mixed with household waste.
  • Pressurized cylinders, batteries or hazardous chemicals.

Need More Household Garbage Capacity?

Public Works currently lists a $55 purchase price for an additional brown City household-waste cart. The City says there is no additional collection charge for that City-purchased second cart.

Qualified low-income resident benefit: the City’s official automated-collection policy PDF states that residents approved under the low-income program may qualify for the additional brown City household-waste cart at no additional cost. The policy also describes that no-cost cart as non-transferable. Because eligibility documentation can change, verify qualification through 311 before relying on the benefit.

Columbus GA Recycling Schedule & Exact Blue-Cart Rules

Public Works states that curbside recycling is collected once a week on the household garbage route day.

Current Columbus curbside blue-cart material rules
Accepted in blue cart Do not put in blue cart Preparation
Plastic #1–#7 containers Plastic bags and straws Empty/rinse as applicable; place loose.
Flattened cardboard Wax-coated containers Flatten before placing in cart.
Paper, envelopes, magazines, junk mail Wrapping paper Keep dry and loose.
Aluminum cans and foil Styrofoam Remove food residue.
Steel / tin cans Glass Empty/rinse.
Lights, cords, hoses and chains Keep tanglers out of recycling machinery.
Medical needles/syringes Use the City’s sharps guidance instead.
All batteries, including lithium-ion Do not place batteries in blue cart.
Tires, toys, car parts Use the appropriate separate program.
Glass: the current Public Works webpage lists glass as not accepted in the curbside blue cart. The City’s recycling instruction PDF directs glass toward recycling drop-off options. Check current drop-off acceptance before making a special trip.

Columbus GA Yard Waste, Leaves, Grass, Brush & Limbs

Current Public Works guidance uses the green rolling cart for routine yard debris such as leaves, grass clippings and pine needles.

🍂

Green Cart

Leaves, grass clippings, pine needles and similar eligible yard debris.

✂️

Pruning Limbs

City-collected pruning limbs must be no more than 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter.

📞

Large Yard Pile

Large piles require a scheduled service request through 311.

Do not mix piles. Public Works states that mixed bulk piles cannot be collected. Keep organic yard material separate from furniture, household garbage and construction material.
Hired landscaper or tree company? Columbus cites local ordinance requiring landscaping, clearing, grading, building and similar contractors to remove the waste generated by their own work. Municipal curbside service is not a disposal substitute for contractor debris.

Columbus GA Bulk Pickup: Furniture, Appliances & Large Piles

Large household appliances, furniture and large piles require a 311-requested scheduled pickup.

🛋️

Household Furniture

Use the scheduled bulk workflow for large furniture that cannot be collected in the normal household cart.

🧺

Large Appliances

Tell 311 exactly what appliance you have so the City can give the correct scheduled service/preparation instruction.

🧱

Construction Debris

Construction and demolition material is not ordinary curbside bulk. Use Pine Grove or the responsible contractor.

Exact Bulk Pickup Workflow

  1. Separate the pile by material type. Furniture/appliances, yard debris and construction debris should not be combined.
  2. Estimate the amount. The current primary Public Works pages do not publish a simple current household bulk-item quantity cap, so tell 311 exactly what and how much you have.
  3. Open the 311 form or call 706-653-4000. Request scheduled bulk service before expecting collection.
  4. Give the complete service address. Do not submit only a subdivision or ZIP code.
  5. Describe every item. Example: “one sofa and one washing machine,” rather than “bulk trash.”
  6. Follow the scheduling instruction you receive. A scheduled crew may service the material on the household route day or another assigned day.
  7. Keep access clear. Do not block roadways, sidewalks, hydrants, utilities or automated carts.

Tree for Fee: When a Whole Tree Is Not Normal Yard Waste

A tree cut down on private property is handled differently from ordinary weekly pruning debris. Public Works uses the Tree for Fee program for qualifying private-property tree removal.

Collection Fee

$50 per load

Current Tipping Fee

$76.50 per ton

Planning Time

Public Works asks residents to allow about one week.

Reduced-Rate Benefit

Approved reduced garbage-rate customers receive the same percentage reduction on the Tree for Fee charge.

Contact detail: the current Collection Information page lists 706-225-4661 for Tree for Fee requests. Integrated Waste’s current contact page also directs residents to 311 / 706-653-4000 for Tree for Fee and reduced-rate questions.
Old PDF rate warning: an older City policy PDF contains a former tree tipping rate. This page uses the newer current Public Works amount of $76.50 per ton, not the stale historic rate.

Columbus Special Disposal: Tires, Paint, Sharps, Batteries & Cylinders

Resident starting point for materials that should not be treated like ordinary bagged trash
Material Current Columbus rule Action
Passenger / light-truck tires Up to 5 per household at a time; rims removed; commercial tires excluded. Confirm collection instructions through 311.
Liquid paint Do not treat liquid hazardous paint like routine curbside trash. Use HHW guidance where appropriate.
Empty / solidified paint cans Public Works says paint should be empty or completely solidified with sand, dirt or cat litter for ordinary disposal. Follow current collection/disposal guidance.
Needles / syringes Use a hard plastic or metal container with secure lid. Call 311 for Waste Collection instruction.
Propane, oxygen or chlorine cylinders Not normal curbside household waste. Contact 311/facility staff for correct handling.
Vehicle, marine, motorcycle or lawn-tractor batteries Not collected as ordinary household curbside waste. Use a proper battery recycling/HHW option.
Lithium-ion batteries Explicitly not accepted in blue recycling cart. Use appropriate battery recycling/HHW route.
Electronics The principal current curbside pages do not publish one broad universal electronics curbside rule. Search the exact item in Columbus GA Recycles or ask 311.

Columbus Cooking Grease Recycling: Local 24/7 Drop-Off Network

Columbus Water Works publishes a local network of 11 stationary fats, oils and grease collection sites. Its current customer material describes the stations as available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

These stations are for appropriate household cooking grease/FOG—not a substitute disposal site for motor oil, chemicals or random hazardous waste.

Columbus GA Trash Holiday Schedule 2026

Columbus publishes government holiday schedules by fiscal year. A complete calendar-year 2026 guide therefore needs both the FY26 and FY27 documents.

Do not apply a generic “one day late” rule. Columbus frequently moves affected Monday, Thursday or Friday routes to a specific Wednesday—and some Friday holiday routes move earlier, not later.

Local Columbus Savings, Credits & Resident Benefits

Several Columbus-specific programs can reduce household costs or provide services residents might otherwise pay for privately.

$18/mo

Approved low-income Public Works garbage rate instead of the standard $24 monthly residential rate.

$10.50/mo credit

Columbus Water Works’ 2026 Low Income Credit Program provides a monthly water-bill credit for eligible customers and also waives the applicable monthly compliance fee under its published program.

Free blue cart

Public Works says a residential recycling cart can be requested and delivered at no cost.

Possible free brown cart

The automated-collection policy states qualified approved low-income customers can qualify for the additional brown household-waste cart at no additional cost.

Tree for Fee reduction

Customers already receiving the reduced garbage rate receive the same percentage reduction on Tree for Fee charges.

Free Recycling Center tours

Local educational tours are offered for residents, schools and groups.

How to Apply / Connect the Low-Income Programs

  1. Call Columbus Citizen Services. Use 311 or 706-653-4000 and ask for the current reduced garbage-rate application requirements.
  2. Ask what documentation is required now. Eligibility guidance is tied to income criteria that can change.
  3. Submit complete documentation. Columbus Water Works specifically warns that incomplete low-income applications cannot be processed.
  4. If approved for the reduced garbage rate, check your water bill. CWW’s January 2026 customer notice states that customers already receiving the reduced garbage rate have the applicable water low-income credit automatically reflected.
  5. If you need a second garbage cart, ask about the low-income cart benefit. Do not automatically pay $55 before confirming eligibility.
  6. Remember recertification. CWW’s current program material says enrolled customers recertify every two years; contact Citizen Services for the applicable deadline.

Missed Columbus GA Trash Pickup: Diagnose It Before Reporting

A cart left at the curb can mean a missed route, but it can also mean late set-out, wrong holiday date, blocked automated access or ineligible material.

  1. Verify the complete address route. Check the official map/app.
  2. Verify the holiday date. Make sure the route was not moved to Wednesday.
  3. Confirm it was outside before 7 AM. The City warns routes can arrive earlier than expected.
  4. Check 3-foot clearance. Cars, mailboxes or other carts can interfere with automated collection.
  5. Look at what was left. Routine trash outside the authorized cart, contaminated recycling or an unscheduled bulk pile is not the same as an eligible missed cart.
  6. If City fault remains likely, report it. Call 311 / 706-653-4000 or use the official online portal.

Special Handling Is Not a Normal Drive-Up Trip

Pine Grove lists special-handling categories including certain asbestos, animals, industrial sludge/ashes, tobacco and medical waste. The City states that appropriate documentation can be required, 24-hour advance notice applies to special waste, and special-handling customers should arrive before the facility’s stated special-waste cutoff.

Questionable material: the landfill page specifically advises customers with items such as fire extinguishers, propane containers or gas cans to speak with scale-house staff rather than guessing where they belong.
On-site rule worth knowing: Pine Grove states that inmate labor is used at the facility and warns visitors against trading, giving, buying or selling items with inmates.

How to Use Columbus Landfill Forms

The official landfill page provides forms for specialized disposal and account needs, including:

  • Waste Disposal Credit Account
  • Asbestos Waste Shipment Record
  • Pine Grove Special Waste Acceptance Application
  • Scrap Tire Transportation Manifest

Official Submission Workflow

  1. Open the official Landfill page. Scroll to the forms section.
  2. Select the form matching the waste or account need. Do not substitute a generic form.
  3. Complete the form. Review all required fields before printing/signing.
  4. Print and sign where required. A typed document is not a substitute when the form calls for a signature.
  5. Scan the completed form. Public Works indicates PDF is the preferred scanned format.
  6. Email the completed document. Send it to WasteDisposalDivision@columbusga.org .
  7. For special waste, do not show up before approval/notice requirements are satisfied. Confirm timing with facility staff.

Pine Grove Municipal Landfill — 7900 Pine Grove Way, Columbus, GA 31907

Columbus GA Household Hazardous Waste

Normal curbside crews do not collect ordinary household hazardous waste as regular household garbage.

Event Program

Public Works says Household Hazardous Waste Day is normally held on the first Saturday in October.

Current official next date: TBD.

Event Location

Recycling & Sustainability Center
8001 Pine Grove Way
Columbus, GA 31907

Examples Listed by Public Works

  • Antifreeze
  • Paints
  • Solvents
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Cleaners
  • Acids
  • Mercury
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
Do not manufacture the 2026 event date. October 3, 2026 is the first Saturday in October, but the official HHW page still says the next event date is TBD. Confirm the City announcement first.

What to Do Before Driving to HHW Day

  1. Open the official HHW page.
  2. Check whether “Next Collection Day” has been updated from TBD.
  3. Confirm your material appears in the current accepted list.
  4. Confirm any quantity/packaging instructions published for the event.
  5. Only then plan the trip to 8001 Pine Grove Way.

Illegal Dumping Is Not the Same as a Missed Pickup

Illegal Dumping

Columbus publishes an illegal-dumping hotline:

706-225-3001

Use the dumping/reporting route for abandoned or illegally disposed material—not as a substitute for reporting your own eligible missed household cart.

Missed Household Collection

Use 311 / 706-653-4000 after verifying the route, holiday, set-out time and cart placement.

New to Columbus? Waste-Service Setup Checklist

  1. Confirm the property actually receives City curbside cart service.
  2. Identify the normal route day. Use the official four-color route map.
  3. Install Columbus GA Recycles and enter the complete address.
  4. Check the property has the correct carts. Black household cart, blue recycling cart and green yard-waste cart as applicable to the municipal service.
  5. If the blue cart is missing, call 706-653-4000. The City currently advertises blue-cart delivery at no cost.
  6. Decide whether one household-garbage cart is enough. Ask 311 about the $55 second brown cart or low-income no-cost eligibility.
  7. Check low-income programs before paying more than necessary. Ask about the reduced garbage rate and connected Columbus Water Works credit if income-qualified.
  8. Save the 311 number. Use 311 / 706-653-4000 for route, missed collection, bulk and many cart questions.

Apartments, Condos & Shared-Dumpster Properties

Do not automatically apply the four residential cart route colors to every Columbus apartment or condo.

Individual City Carts

Use the map/app workflow if your residence genuinely receives municipal individual-cart collection.

Shared Dumpster

Ask management who the contracted hauler is and where bulk, recycling and special waste must go.

Private Community Rules

HOA/property rules can control the collection point and container even when the mailing address says Columbus.

If a resident has a mobility or accessibility need that makes ordinary curb placement difficult, call 311 and ask what current accommodation options are available for that specific account/property. The principal current Public Works pages reviewed for this article do not publish enough eligibility detail to responsibly invent an assisted-collection program.

Passing a Columbus Sanitation Truck: Local Safety Rule

Columbus Public Works highlights Georgia requirements for drivers approaching sanitation vehicles with active workers and warning lights.

When conditions allow: move into a lane not adjacent to the sanitation vehicle. If a safe lane change is not possible, slow to a reasonable speed that is at least 10 mph below the posted speed or 25 mph, whichever is more, and be prepared to stop. Public Works notes that a violation can carry a fine of up to $250.

What the Official Columbus PDFs Add Beyond the Government Landing Pages

Several useful details are buried in government PDFs. The important part is to extract the resident-facing rule without blindly copying stale numbers.

2024 Automated Collection Policy PDF

Effective Sept. 9, 2024

  • Routine household waste must be in City black/brown cart.
  • Bulk outside the cart needs 311 scheduling.
  • Yard-waste routes were realigned with normal collection days.
  • Large bulk/yard piles require a 311 request.
  • Private-property cut trees use Tree for Fee.
  • Pruning limb limit: 4 ft long / 6 in diameter.
  • Low-income approved customers may qualify for an additional brown cart at no additional cost.

Open official recycling PDF

FY26 + FY27 Holiday PDFs

  • Calendar 2026 spans two fiscal-year documents.
  • Friday routes can move earlier to Wednesday.
  • Labor Day Monday route moves to Wednesday Sept. 9.
  • Thanksgiving Thursday route moves to Wednesday Nov. 25.
  • Current Dec. 24/25 make-up cells are blank—so no date should be invented.

Solid Waste Management Plan

The long-range City plan provides service-area and program context, including the Columbus/Muscogee jurisdiction, recycling/public-education goals and illegal-disposal prevention.

Historic operational quantities or rates in an older planning document are not used here as current 2026 fees.

Keep Columbus Beautiful & Local Waste-Reduction Programs

Keep Columbus Beautiful works on local cleanup, recycling, litter prevention and sustainability activities. Seasonal campaigns can change each year, so residents should use the current program page rather than relying on an old event calendar.

The previous Christmas-tree recycling campaign used several Columbus park locations and reused trees for fish habitat. Columbus GA Trash Pickup FAQs

What are the normal Columbus GA trash pickup days?

The current official residential route map uses Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Your exact day depends on the complete service address.

How do I find my pickup day by address?

Locate the address on the official four-color Public Works route map and then confirm the complete address in the Columbus GA Recycles app.

Is Wednesday a normal Columbus residential pickup day?

No normal Wednesday zone appears on the four-color map. Selected Wednesdays are used for holiday make-up service.

What time should my garbage cart be out?

Public Works instructs residents to have the household garbage cart curbside before 7:00 AM.

How far apart should the carts be?

Keep automated carts at least 3 feet from other carts, vehicles, mailboxes and similar obstacles.

Is Columbus GA recycling weekly?

Yes. Public Works states that recycling is collected once a week on the household garbage route day.

Can glass go in the blue recycling cart?

No. The current Public Works curbside recycling list excludes glass from the blue cart. Check current drop-off guidance for glass instead.

Can I leave extra household garbage bags beside my black cart?

Current automated-collection policy requires routine household waste to be inside an authorized City black or brown household-waste cart.

How much is a second household garbage cart?

Public Works currently lists a $55 purchase price for the second brown household cart and no additional collection charge for that City-purchased cart.

Can a low-income resident get a second brown cart for free?

The City’s automated-collection policy states that approved qualifying low-income residents may be eligible for the additional brown cart at no additional cost. Confirm current qualification through 311.

Does furniture require a 311 request?

Yes. Large household appliances, furniture and large piles require a scheduled service request through 311.

Is there a current published bulk item limit?

The principal current Public Works pages reviewed for this guide do not publish one simple current residential item-count cap. Tell 311 exactly what and how much you have when scheduling.

Will the City pick up contractor construction debris?

Construction/demolition waste is not ordinary municipal curbside bulk, and contractors are responsible for material generated by their work.

What is Tree for Fee?

Tree for Fee is the paid City program for qualifying trees cut down on private property. Current charges are $50 per load plus $76.50 per ton.

Does Labor Day change Columbus GA trash collection in 2026?

Yes for the Monday route. Monday, September 7, 2026 service is moved to Wednesday, September 9.

What happens on Christmas 2026?

As reviewed August 30, the current FY27 government PDF lists the December 24 and December 25 holidays but leaves their waste make-up fields blank. Recheck the City schedule before set-out.

Where is Pine Grove Municipal Landfill?

7900 Pine Grove Way, Columbus, GA 31907. Facility phone: 706-225-4516.

Do I need ID to use Pine Grove?

The current facility page asks Muscogee County residents for valid ID and a water bill. Contractors need proof that their work is in Muscogee County.

Can I take a mixed landfill load and sort it there?

No. Pine Grove states that mixed loads are not permitted and on-site separation is not allowed.

When is Household Hazardous Waste Day in 2026?

Public Works says the event is normally the first Saturday in October, but its current page still lists the next collection date as TBD.

Final Columbus GA Resident Action Plan

1. Identify the complete service address and confirm that the property uses Columbus municipal cart service.

2. Find the address on the official map: blue Monday, green Tuesday, purple Thursday, peach Friday.

3. Confirm the address and upcoming dates in Columbus GA Recycles.

4. Before a holiday, read the actual government make-up date instead of assuming a one-day delay.

5. Put routine household garbage in the authorized black/brown cart before 7 AM with at least 3 feet of clearance.

6. Keep recycling loose in the blue cart and yard debris in the green cart.

7. Schedule furniture, large appliances and large piles through 311.

8. Before paying for extra capacity, check the reduced garbage rate, low-income brown-cart benefit and Columbus Water Works credit.

9. Before visiting a landfill, verify material category, fee, residency documents, operating hours and whether special approval is required.

Independent Guide Notice

Trash-Pickup.org is an independent resident-information resource. It is not Columbus Consolidated Government, Public Works, Integrated Waste, Columbus Water Works or 311. This page cannot dispatch a truck, access a resident account or provide live truck positioning.

Information reviewed August 30, 2026. Route map, current Public Works service pages, automated-collection policy, FY26/FY27 holiday documents, recycling PDF, landfill information, HHW page and local assistance materials were reviewed for resident-facing details. Time-sensitive holidays, alerts, rates, events and facility rules should be rechecked before acting.

Number 1 mistake: Plastic bags in the blue cart. They jam sorting machines and send entire truckloads to landfill. Take them to Kroger, Publix, or Target drop-off bins instead.
