Hawaiʻi’s Deposit Beverage Container Program charges a refundable 5¢ deposit on eligible labeled beverage containers. Returning them to a certified redemption center lets the consumer reclaim the deposit instead of putting the containers into ordinary trash.

Additional Blue Cart
ENV issues extra blue carts when a household consistently produces more accepted recyclables than the existing cart can hold after proper sorting and compacting.
Homes with a smaller 64-gallon blue cart can also request a swap to a 94-gallon blue cart under the same general blue-cart eligibility process.
Second Gray Cart: Honolulu Makes the Household Pass a Monitoring Test
A second gray cart is only for properties that consistently generate unusually high volumes of non-recyclable household trash.

ENV describes the benchmark as approximately half a cart — about 3 to 4 additional trash bags beyond what can fit into the existing properly compacted gray cart during each monitoring week.

Most multi-family buildings coordinate ordinary refuse through building management or a private hauler, so the single-family gray/blue/green calendar should not automatically be applied to an apartment dumpster.

Before Loading Your Vehicle
- Current ENV rule allows two residential loads per day at City disposal sites, including the Hawaiian Earth green-waste contractor.
- Typical permitted vehicles: sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks and minivans.
- Trailers are restricted.
- A limited-size rental vehicle can be accepted if the rental agreement is in the householder’s name and the resident is present.
- Trailers or larger rental vehicles require preapproval for a transfer station and cannot simply use a convenience center.
- For preapproval, ENV tells residents to provide vehicle information and the waste list to disposal@honolulu.gov .
- Sort waste by material type before unloading.
- Attendants do not unload the vehicle for you.

Missed Honolulu Trash Pickup: Tag vs. No Tag
Honolulu’s official missed-collection process has an important first step: look for a tag.
A Tag Was Left
The cart may have been:
- Blocked by a parked car.
- Too bulky or heavy.
- Filled with the wrong material.
- Otherwise inaccessible or uncollectible.
Correct the problem. ENV says improperly prepared/inaccessible refuse is collected on the next collection day after correction.

If the cart appears genuinely missed:
- Leave the cart at the curb.

What day is trash pickup in Honolulu?
Honolulu does not have one universal citywide garbage day. Use the official HNL Info address tool to find the gray-cart weekday and the alternating blue/green schedule for the exact property.
How often is the gray cart collected?
Most automated-service households receive gray-cart refuse collection once every week.
How often are blue and green carts collected?
Each is normally collected once every two weeks, alternating weekly between blue mixed recyclables and green waste.
What time should Honolulu carts be out?
Set eligible curbside material out by 6 AM on collection day and no earlier than 6 PM the previous evening.
How much clearance does my cart need?
At least five feet from fences, lampposts, fire hydrants, mailboxes, parked vehicles and other obstructions.
Which way should the cart face?
Place the automated cart directly at the curb with the handle facing away from the street.
Can I get an extra Honolulu cart for free?
Qualified properties in the three-cart program can receive additional carts without a cart charge. Properties are limited to five City carts total and eligibility depends on the cart color and recurring need.
Can I automatically get a second gray cart?
No. ENV requires monitoring to verify recurring excess non-recyclable household trash and proper use of the blue and green carts.
Does Honolulu bulky trash require an appointment?
Yes. The current system is appointment-based. Only items listed in the appointment are collected.
How many bulky items can I schedule?
A single-family home can schedule up to five bulky waste items per standard appointment and up to two metal appliances per separate appliance appointment.
How often can I make a bulky appointment?
Normally one appointment per address per month. Waikīkī residents have a current exception allowing weekly appointments.
Does Labor Day delay Honolulu trash in 2026?
Honolulu’s standing ENV refuse-worker holiday policy identifies Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as the two observed refuse holidays. Labor Day 2026 therefore normally follows the regular address schedule unless ENV issues a special service notice.
What happens to blue or green collection on Christmas or New Year’s Day?
Under ENV’s standing holiday guidance, recycling/green-waste service that falls on those holidays is not made up; residents hold the material for the next scheduled recycling collection.
Can food scraps go in my green cart in 2026?
Only when the household is currently eligible for the G.R.O.W. program. The pilot began in selected areas on April 1, 2026 and the City has publicly presented an island-wide rollout planned for October 1, 2026.
Can I use compostable bags for G.R.O.W.?
No. ENV says no plastic of any kind, including bags marketed as compostable or biodegradable.
What should I do if my cart was missed?
First check for a City tag. If tagged, correct the stated problem for the next collection. If no tag was left and the cart appears genuinely missed, leave it at the curb and call the collection yard serving your area.
Who do I call for a missed cart in urban Honolulu?
Honolulu Collection Yard serves Foster Village through Hawaiʻi Kai and is listed at (808) 768-5990.
What do I do if my City cart was stolen?
Report the missing/stolen cart to Honolulu Police first, obtain the police report number and then contact the collection yard serving your area for replacement instructions.
When is the next Honolulu HHW event after August 2026?
The current ENV calendar lists November 7, 2026 with registration open and an October 29 deadline, unless the 200-appointment capacity is reached earlier.
How many residential loads can I bring to a City disposal site?
ENV’s current residential rule allows two loads per day at City disposal sites, including its contracted Wahiawā green-waste facility, subject to each facility’s material and vehicle rules.
Can I take tires to Keʻehi Transfer Station?
No. The current ENV Keʻehi listing says tires are not accepted there. Current residential rules list up to four passenger/light-truck tires per month at eligible other disposal sites.
Can I put concrete or drywall in the gray cart?
No. Concrete, construction debris, soil and rocks are excluded from ordinary curbside refuse. Current City rules route inert/C&D materials to specific facilities with separate limits.
Is there a cash incentive for recycling an old refrigerator on Oʻahu?
Hawaiʻi Energy currently lists a $75 Rid-A-Fridge rebate with free haul-away for an eligible working refrigerator/freezer, plus a separate $250 qualifying ENERGY STAR refrigerator Trade-Up rebate.

4. If using G.R.O.W., confirm that the service address is currently eligible before putting food scraps in green.
