How often? Standard City residential garbage collection is once per week. The same assigned weekly day is also used for eligible brush and properly prepared yard waste.

Killeen Cart Set-Out: Exact Timing and Placement

  • Keep the lid closed; do not load garbage above the rim.
Container relocation can cost money. The City says a driver may move and tag an improperly placed cart as a courtesy the first time. Continued placement within four feet of an obstruction can result in the adopted relocation fee.

Killeen Extra Garbage: Plastic Bags Only Under the Current FAQ/Brochure

If ordinary household garbage will not fit in the cart, do not automatically pile boxes next to it.

Killeen Brush Pickup: Six Cubic Yards + Mechanical-Boom Clearance

Brush is not treated like ordinary bagged garbage. It is collected separately and taken for chipping, which is why the City requires a clean pile and room for the mechanical boom/grapple.

Six-yard vs. 4 × 4 × 12 wording: City materials use the representative dimensions “4 ft wide × 4 ft high × 12 ft long” near the six-cubic-yard allowance. A perfect mathematical box of those dimensions is about 7.1 cubic yards, so do not treat the dimensions as permission to exceed the written six-cubic-yard allowance. If the pile is close to the limit, call Solid Waste before set-out.

Killeen Bulk Trash: Furniture, Mattresses & Large Items

Killeen does not treat couches, mattresses and other bulky household items as ordinary free cart overflow. They are a special fee-based collection service.

No separate normal-route appointment is described for ordinary eligible scheduled-day curbside bulk. City rules say eligible waste placed curbside on the scheduled weekly day is collected and the utility account for that address is billed. Placing the material curbside grants permission for the pickup. If you need service on a different day, premium-service charges apply.

Damage from Customer Neglect

FY2026 lists a $75 service fee plus replacement-part costs for lids, wheels or other hardware damaged through customer neglect.

If the Cart Is Stolen

City carts are assigned to the residence by serial number.

  • If the cart is stolen at a time when it should not normally be outside, City policy says the resident can be responsible for replacement.
  • Report a stolen cart to both the Killeen Police Department and Solid Waste Division.
  • If the City damages the cart, or it is stolen while properly outside on the designated collection day, the City’s published brochure says it will be replaced without an additional replacement charge.

Important Local Correction: Clear Creek Recycling Trailer Is Gone

Do not drive to 6520 Clear Creek Road for recycling. The City permanently removed that trailer effective May 23, 2025 because of high contamination and illegal dumping. Its replacement location is at Texas A&M University–Central Texas, 1001 Leadership Place.

This matters because old web pages, search results or saved map pins can continue to surface the former Clear Creek location long after the City moves a trailer.

Killeen Missed Trash Pickup: Diagnose It Before Paying for a Return Trip

The FY2026 schedule contains a $30 “missed service; return trip on scheduled collection day” fee. That makes it especially important to distinguish a resident-caused missed set-out from a City service problem.

  3. Check the 7:00 AM deadline. If material was placed out after the truck passed, a paid return service can be different from a genuine City miss.
  4. Inspect the cart. Confirm lid closed, not overloaded, correct orientation and approximately four feet from obstacles.
  5. Look for a City orange tag. A tagged cart may indicate a preparation or placement problem rather than an unfinished route.
