Find the Local Route Before New Jersey Trash Day
New Jersey does not assign one statewide residential garbage day. Newark, East Orange, Paterson, Trenton, Hamilton Township and other municipalities use different zones, street lists, private contractors, holiday rules and bulk-waste systems.
Enter your ZIP code below — we'll take you straight to your city's official schedule. No searching, no confusion.
Use this guide to identify the correct jurisdiction, check Newark service today or tomorrow, read East Orange’s 2026 handbook, avoid Paterson’s outdated-map trap, decode Trenton’s flyer and search Hamilton Township’s street-by-street schedule.
New Jersey Trash Pickup Schedule 2026: Quick Answer
There is no single New Jersey garbage collection calendar. Local governments use municipal trucks, contracted haulers, private customer arrangements or intergovernmental systems. The correct schedule depends on the municipality and service address.
Begin with the city, township or borough responsible for the property. Then use its official address calendar, zone map, street list, Recycle Coach entry or sanitation office. Garbage, recycling, bulk items, appliances and yard waste may each follow a different schedule.
This article covers the requested search locations: Newark, East Orange, Paterson, Trenton and Hamilton Township. Hamilton Township in Mercer County and Hamilton Township in Atlantic County are different systems.
Why New Jersey Collection Schedules Are Local
New Jersey municipalities use several collection models. Some contract with a private company, some use municipal Public Works crews, some require residents to secure private service and some share collection through an intergovernmental agreement.
Municipal crews
The local Public Works department operates the residential collection route.
Contracted hauler
The municipality sets the rules while a private company performs collection.
Private property contract
A landlord, apartment, condominium or HOA may arrange its own dumpster service.
Shared local service
Another municipality or county authority may administer part of the waste system.
How to identify the correct provider
- Confirm the municipality on the service address. Do not rely only on a ZIP code or postal-city name.
- Identify the property type. A house may use municipal curbside service while a large apartment uses a private dumpster.
- Find the current official schedule tool. Look for an address calendar, collection zone, street PDF or Recycle Coach portal.
- Check each waste stream separately. Garbage, recycling, bulk waste, appliances and yard waste frequently use different days.
- Check holiday and emergency notices. The permanent weekday is not proof that collection operates normally today.
Choose the Correct New Jersey Municipality
This selector identifies the correct official starting path. It does not search municipal databases or determine an address route.

East Orange Garbage Pickup Schedule 2026
East Orange divides collection into North, Central and South sections. The 2026 handbook provides street names and house-number ranges because some streets cross more than one section.
| Section | Garbage | Bulk trash | Recycling | Leaf-season pickup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North | Monday and Thursday | Every Thursday | Every other Tuesday | Thursday and Friday |
| Central | Tuesday and Friday | Every Friday | Every other Wednesday | Wednesday |
| South | Wednesday and Saturday | Every Saturday | Every other Monday | Monday and Tuesday |
How to find an East Orange section
- Open the 2026 handbook. North, Central and South street lists appear on pages 23–25.
- Search the street name. Use the PDF search function on a phone or computer.
- Read the house-number range. A street may appear in more than one section.
- Use the map only as orientation. The street and address range is more precise near Park Avenue and Central Avenue boundaries.
East Orange can and bag rules
- Do not set garbage out before 6:00 PM the night before.
- Put garbage in a plastic bag and then inside a can.
- Loose bags, paper bags, boxes and loose garbage inside a can are not accepted.
- Use a black or gray can with capacity up to 50 gallons.
- The filled can must not exceed 50 pounds.
East Orange bulk-item rules
- Maximum of three bulk items on the assigned weekly bulk day.
- Keep bulk items separate from ordinary household garbage.
- Cut carpet rolls to no more than four feet wide.
- Cut branches to four-foot lengths and tie no more than three liftable bundles.
- Cover mattresses and box springs in clear 1.5-mil polyethylene mattress bags.
- Do not place more than three items at the curb; use the resident drop-off option for a larger eligible load.
Appointment-only East Orange items
Tires, televisions, computers, electronics, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, appliances and metal require an appointment. Call 973-266-5337 before placing them at the curb. The handbook separately lists 973-489-4992 for metal pickup and tells residents to remove refrigerator and freezer doors for safety.
After understanding these rules, use the complete official handbook to search the street and recycling dates.

Electronics, Paint, Chemicals and Other Special Waste
Do not assume that an item accepted at one city yard is accepted in another municipality. Electronics and household hazardous waste frequently use county events, appointments or approved collection sites.
Electronics
Use the local municipal program or the NJDEP collection-site list for televisions, computers and covered devices.
Hazardous products
Paint, gasoline, solvents, pesticides and similar products require a county or municipal household hazardous-waste program.
Construction debris
Concrete, drywall, roofing, treated lumber and contractor waste commonly require a registered private hauler or approved facility.
Before using a private waste hauler
- Ask whether the company is registered to transport the type of waste.
- Request a written estimate showing labor, disposal and surcharge costs.
- Confirm whether the price covers stairs, dismantling or excessive weight.
- Ask where the material will be taken.
- Keep the receipt or disposal record.
Use the NJDEP resources below only after identifying the waste type and confirming that the municipal program cannot take it.
Find NJDEP E-Waste Sites Find a Local Recycling Coordinator Find County HHW HelpHow to Report a Missed Garbage Pickup
- Wait until the local route window ends. Hamilton specifically directs residents to wait until after 6:00 PM for a whole-street miss.
- Confirm the address route. Check the official zone, street range, address calendar or Recycle Coach entry.
- Review preparation. Verify the set-out time, container, lid, bag, weight and item limit.
- Check holidays and emergencies. Determine whether the municipality announced a cancellation or makeup date.
- Contact the correct department or hauler. Provide the complete address, collection date, waste type and photographs.

Snow, Flooding and Emergency Delays
Snow placement
Do not bury containers behind a plowed snowbank or place them where they block snow-removal equipment.
Flooded street
Keep carts and loose waste away from standing water, storm drains and emergency access routes.
Canceled service
Follow the municipality’s announcement. Some routes resume on the next regular day rather than receiving an immediate makeup.
Apartments, Condominiums, HOAs and Businesses
Apartments
A larger building may use a private dumpster rather than municipal curbside service.
Condominiums and HOAs
The association may contract separately for garbage, recycling and bulk removal.
Renters
Ask management where move-out furniture, cardboard and large items must be placed.
Businesses
Commercial waste usually follows a private contract or separate municipal rules.
