Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Richmond trash pickup schedule?

Richmond trash pickup schedule garbage collection is address-based. City of Richmond residential trash is collected once per week, Monday through Thursday, and must be placed inside a City-issued supercan. Use the official Richmond map lookup to find your trash day, recycling day and neighborhood cleanup information.

Put your supercan out no earlier than 4:00 PM the day before collection and no later than 6:00 AM on collection day. Remove it from City property by 7:00 AM the day after collection. Recycling is handled through CVWMA and generally follows every-other-week Red/Blue recycling weeks.

Richmond’s trash schedule is not a one-line citywide answer. Your trash day depends on your address and route. The official City map can also help you find your recycling day and neighborhood cleanup information, so it is the first place a resident should check.

1

Open the Richmond address lookup map

Enter your service address, not just your ZIP code. Richmond has different route days, and nearby streets can sometimes be on different collection patterns.

2

Record trash day and recycling week

Trash is weekly. Recycling is every other week through CVWMA, so you need both pieces of information to avoid putting carts out on the wrong week.

3

Set a reminder for 4 PM the day before

The City allows supercans out no earlier than 4:00 PM the day before collection and requires them out by 6:00 AM on collection day.

4

Use RVA311 if the lookup or service fails

Dial 3-1-1 inside the City or call 804-646-7000 if outside city limits. For supercan identification, call Solid Waste at 804-646-1798.

Official lookup: Use the City’s map to find your trash day, recycle day and neighborhood cleanup day.

Supercan Rules

Richmond Supercan Rules — Timing, Placement, Extra Cans, Back Door Service and Fines

Richmond DPW does not service cans that were not issued by the Department. All trash must be placed inside a City-issued supercan with a City of Richmond serial number. Items placed in non-issued cans or containers can be left behind and may receive a violation notice.

Weekly Trash Basics
  • Residential trash is collected once per week.
  • Regular collection is Monday through Thursday.
  • Trash must be inside a City-issued supercan.
  • Bagged refuse and boxes may be removed during weekly collection.
  • DPW services about 90 routes and thousands of residences and small businesses.
Timing and Placement
  • Do not place your supercan out before 4:00 PM the day before collection.
  • Place it out no later than 6:00 AM on collection day.
  • Place it near your property line or alley where normal collection occurs.
  • Remove it from City property by 7:00 AM the day after collection.
  • A $50 fine may be assessed for cans left in the right-of-way outside allowed times.

Extra supercans and replacement cans

By City Code, one green supercan is provided to each city residence for solid waste collection. Up to three additional brown cans may be purchased for $55 each, with the fee applied to the water utility bill in your name. You can request a replacement if your supercan is damaged. Delivery may take 7 to 14 business days depending on availability.

Supercan ID Call 804-646-1798 if you need the serial number or identification number.
Extra Cans Order through RVA311 or the online 311 portal.
Back Door Service Available case-by-case for eligible elderly or disabled residents.
Businesses Some small businesses may use City cans, but larger volume requires private service.

Resident trap: Leaving a supercan in the alley or right-of-way after pickup feels harmless, but the City specifically warns that cans must be removed by 7:00 AM the day after collection. If you travel or work late, set a reminder or ask someone nearby to pull it back.

Holiday Delays

Richmond Holiday Trash Pickup Schedule — How City Holidays Delay Collection

Trash is not collected on City holidays. When a City holiday interrupts the regular Monday through Thursday collection schedule, collection resumes the day after the holiday and continues through Friday. Recycling holiday details should be checked through CVWMA because recycling is managed separately.

Holiday SituationWhat HappensResident Action
Holiday on MondayMonday trash shifts to Tuesday, Tuesday shifts to Wednesday, and so on.Leave the supercan out only within allowed timing; check DPW notices.
Holiday on TuesdayTuesday and later routes may shift one day later through Friday.Confirm before calling it missed.
Holiday on WednesdayWednesday and Thursday routes may shift later.Use RVA311 or DPW updates if service is delayed.
Holiday on ThursdayThursday trash may be collected Friday.Do not assume missed pickup until the holiday schedule window has passed.
Recycling holiday weekCVWMA posts recycling-specific holiday updates.Use CVWMA schedule or call 804-340-0900.

Simple holiday rule: If the holiday is before or on your regular pickup day, expect a one-day delay unless the City posts a different notice. If your pickup day was before the holiday, it may remain normal.

Recycling

Richmond Recycling Pickup — CVWMA Red/Blue Weeks, Same Trash Day, Every Other Week

Richmond curbside recycling is handled through the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, commonly called CVWMA. Your recycling collection day is generally the same weekday as your trash day, but it occurs every other week on Red or Blue weeks.

How Richmond Recycling Works
  • Collection is Monday through Thursday.
  • Your day is determined by your home address.
  • Recycling is every other week, not every week.
  • Use CVWMA’s web tool to look up the exact day and week.
  • Place recycling out by 7:00 AM on collection day.
Accepted Recycling Examples
  • Aluminum and steel cans.
  • Glass bottles and jars.
  • Paper and cardboard.
  • Plastic bottles, jugs and accepted containers.
  • Clean, empty and dry materials work best.

Do not guess your recycling week: Use CVWMA’s address lookup or calendar before putting recycling out.

CVWMA Recycling Lookup

Apartment warning: CVWMA’s curbside program is for eligible residential customers such as single-family homes, duplexes and fourplexes. Apartment complexes and businesses may not be served by the same curbside recycling program. Ask your property manager if your building uses private recycling.

Bulk & Brush

Richmond Bulk and Brush Pickup — Bi-Weekly Collection During Your Recycling Week

Richmond bulk and brush collection is bi-weekly year-round and mirrors the recycling collection schedule. That means bulk and brush should be placed out on your trash collection day during your recycling week, not on every trash day.

What to Expect
  • Bulk and brush collection is bi-weekly.
  • Collection occurs on your trash day during your recycling week.
  • Place bulk items near your trash cans the night before your scheduled collection day.
  • Bulk collection typically occurs on your collection day.
  • If not collected that day, crews may return by Saturday of your recycling week.
Prohibited Bulk Items
  • Construction debris.
  • Tires, with or without rims.
  • Carpet.
  • Auto parts.
  • Bricks, drywall and pipes.
  • Paint, gas tanks and propane tanks.
  • Lawn mowers.

When should I call 311 for bulk items?

If bulk items are not collected by Saturday of your recycling week, contact 3-1-1. The City specifically says not to contact CVWMA for bulk and brush because bulk pickup is a City of Richmond DPW service, not a recycling program.

Regular bulk Bi-weekly on trash day during your recycling week.
Fast request Same-day or within-24-hours request is listed at $100 after payment.
Appliances Collection is listed at $50 per appliance/request.
Storm debris Cut debris small enough for crews; pieces should be manageable.

Do not dump early: Bulk left out on the wrong week can sit in front of the property, attract complaints, block alleys, and create confusion. Match bulk and brush to your recycling week.

Drop-Off

Richmond Bulk Drop-Off and Transfer Station Options — Where to Take Items Yourself

City residents can take some bulk and brush items to official City disposal locations. Proof of residency may be required, and operating hours can change around holidays, weather, staffing and service notices.

Leaves & Yard Debris

Richmond Leaf Collection and Yard Debris — Bagged Leaves, Vacuum Requests and Seasonal Rules

Richmond’s leaf collection program has separate seasonal rules from ordinary trash. The City’s current leaf page says up to six bags may be collected on normal trash day, with biodegradable bags preferred, and sector collection periods may allow unlimited bag collection during designated dates.

Bagged Leaves
  • Place bagged leaves near your supercan or normal trash collection point.
  • Up to six bags may be collected weekly on normal trash day.
  • Biodegradable or compostable bags are preferred.
  • Do not block alleys, sidewalks or streets with leaf bags.
Vacuum Leaf Service
  • Vacuum collection is seasonal.
  • Residents may request vacuum service through RVA311.
  • The City lists a $30 payment per vacuum request on the current page.
  • Leaves should be raked to the curb or property line, not into the street or gutter.

Micro-level resident tip: Do not mix leaf bags with household trash, bulk trash or construction waste. If you have storm limbs, check the bulk and brush storm instructions instead of assuming leaf collection will take branches.

Missed Pickup

Missed Trash Pickup Richmond VA — What to Check Before You Submit RVA311

Before reporting a missed pickup, check the timing, holiday schedule, collection day, supercan rules and whether the item belongs in trash, recycling, bulk, leaf collection or drop-off. Many “missed pickups” are actually wrong-week bulk items, recycling-week confusion, blocked cans or cans left out too late.

1

Confirm the collection day

Use the official address lookup. Trash day, recycling week and neighborhood cleanup information can vary by address.

2

Check timing and holiday delay

Supercans should be out by 6:00 AM. If there was a City holiday, collection may be delayed one day and continue through Friday.

3

Check the service stream

Trash is DPW. Recycling is CVWMA. Bulk and brush is DPW. Leaf collection has separate seasonal rules. Calling the wrong program delays your answer.

4

Submit through RVA311

Call 3-1-1 inside the City, call 804-646-7000 from outside city limits, or submit a request through RVA311.com or the RVA311 mobile app.
