Winnipeg Trash Pickup, Garbage Collection & Recycling Schedule 2026

This guide is written like a Winnipeg resident’s practical checklist: how to find your collection day, how to place carts in front-street or back-lane service, what to do after a missed pickup, when yard waste starts, how large-item pickup works, and where to take items that should not go in your cart.

Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Winnipeg trash pickup schedule?

Winnipeg trash pickup schedule garbage collection is address-based. Use the official MyUtility “Find your collection day” tool to check your recycling, garbage and yard waste date. Most cart customers have weekly garbage and recycling collection, and yard waste is collected every two weeks during the seasonal program.

Put carts out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. If your carts are not collected by 6 p.m., report the missed collection through MyUtility or 311. If you have too much garbage or a large item, request a paid extra garbage or large item pickup at least two full business days before your regular collection day.

City Help

The fastest way to confirm your Winnipeg garbage day is the City’s MyUtility collection-day search. Enter your address and check the next dates for garbage, recycling and yard waste. Do not rely only on a neighbour’s cart because back-lane service, front-street service, holiday weeks, multi-unit service and yard-waste area timing can change the answer.

1

Open MyUtility

Use the official “Find your collection day” page, not an old screenshot or social media post. MyUtility can also help with reminders and service requests.

2

Search the exact service address

Use the address where carts are collected. This matters if you recently moved, live on a lane, or share service with another unit.

3

Check all three streams

Garbage and recycling are weekly for cart customers. Yard waste is every two weeks during the seasonal program and may show area-based start timing.

4

Save the reminder

Set a phone reminder for the night before and another before 7 a.m. on pickup day. Winter snow and lane access problems are easier to avoid when carts are ready early.

Official lookup: Use MyUtility to confirm your exact address-based collection date.

Cart Rules

Winnipeg Garbage and Recycling Cart Rules — Back Lane, Front Street, Winter Snow and Overflow Mistakes

Winnipeg cart collection is simple only when the cart is placed where the truck can actually reach it. The City says carts must be placed at the edge of the back lane if you have back-lane service, or at the edge of the front street if you do not. Carts must be on an even surface and an arm’s length away from other objects or structures.

Do This Every Collection Day
  • Put carts out by 7 a.m. on collection day.
  • Place carts on an even surface at the correct collection point.
  • Keep carts an arm’s length away from fences, parked vehicles, poles, trees and other carts.
  • Clear snow from under and on top of carts in winter.
  • Move carts back onto your property after collection.
  • Write your address on your carts to prevent mix-ups.
Avoid This
  • Do not overfill carts.
  • Do not place extra materials on top of the lid.
  • Do not leave extra bags beside the cart unless you requested extra pickup.
  • Do not bag recyclables before putting them in the recycling cart.
  • Do not put hazardous items in garbage or recycling carts.
  • Do not leave carts buried in snow or frozen into windrows.

Winnipeg winter tip: A cart that is technically “out” but buried in snow can still be missed. Clear the lid, wheels and area around the cart before 7 a.m. Collection crews need enough space to grab and empty it safely.

Holiday Schedule

Winnipeg 2026 Holiday Garbage Schedule — Which Holidays Actually Delay Pickup?

Winnipeg’s regular cart collection is not delayed by every civic holiday. The City’s cart collection page says the only days it does not collect are New Year’s Day, Remembrance Day and Christmas Day. If your collection day falls on or after one of those holidays, put carts and yard waste out one day later for that week only.

2026 HolidayDateDayCollection Impact
New Year’s DayJanuary 1, 2026ThursdayNo collection that day. Thursday and later routes should check MyUtility for the one-day shift.
Louis Riel DayFebruary 16, 2026MondayNot listed as one of the three no-collection days for carts; verify if facility hours matter.
Good FridayApril 3, 2026FridayNot listed as one of the three no-collection days for carts; verify MyUtility if unsure.
Victoria DayMay 18, 2026MondayCity holiday-hours page says recycling, garbage and yard waste are collected normally for Monday routes.
Canada DayJuly 1, 2026WednesdayNot listed as a cart no-collection day; check MyUtility for your address.
Labour DaySeptember 7, 2026MondayNot listed as a cart no-collection day; check MyUtility if your reminder changes.
Remembrance DayNovember 11, 2026WednesdayNo collection that day. Wednesday and later routes should expect a one-day shift that week.
Christmas DayDecember 25, 2026FridayNo collection that day. Friday route should verify MyUtility for the adjusted pickup day.

Holiday trap: Do not assume Winnipeg follows a “delay every statutory holiday” rule. It does not. The safest approach is to open MyUtility when a holiday falls in your collection week and follow the address-specific reminder.

Yard Waste

Winnipeg Yard Waste Collection Schedule — Area A, Area B, Bags, Branches and Biweekly Pickup

Yard waste collection is seasonal and runs from spring through fall, weather dependent. For 2026, the City says yard waste starts May 4 in collection area A and May 11 in collection area B. Cart collection customers receive yard waste pickup once every two weeks on the regular collection day.

Use These Containers
  • Reusable container without a lid.
  • Cardboard box.
  • Brown paper yard waste bag.
  • Place yard waste out before 7 a.m. on the collection day shown in MyUtility.
  • Keep each container, bag or bundle at 50 lbs. / 22 kg or less.
Accepted Yard Waste
  • Grass clippings.
  • Leaves.
  • Plants.
  • Pumpkins without paint, candles or decorations.
  • Small tree branches bundled and cut to City limits.

Branch rule: Small branches must be no more than 10 cm / 4 inches in diameter, 1 metre in length and 50 lbs. / 22 kg. Larger branches and tree stumps should go to a 4R Winnipeg Depot.

Do not include: yard tools, equipment, toys, plant pots or plastic bags. Store yard waste dry until pickup day to prevent messy bags and rejected material.

Large Items

Winnipeg Extra Garbage and Large Item Pickup — Sofas, Appliances, Refrigerators and Extra Bags

If you have extra garbage or large items that do not fit in your cart, you can request a pickup through MyUtility for a fee. The City says it can pick up things that do not fit into your cart and items with ozone-depleting substances, including large appliances, furniture, refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.

What You Can Request
  • Up to three extra garbage bags per pickup.
  • Up to 10 large items per pickup.
  • Large appliances.
  • Furniture.
  • Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners.
  • Other bulky household items that do not fit in the cart.
Timing Rules
  • Request pickup at least two full business days before your regular collection day.
  • Your pickup day is confirmed when you request service.
  • Modify or cancel at least two full business days before the scheduled pickup.
  • Report a missed large-item pickup through MyUtility if it was scheduled and not collected.

Book large-item pickup: Request it before dragging items to the curb. Fees apply and pickup must be scheduled first.

Request Large Item Pickup

Real Winnipeg mistake: A couch or mattress beside the cart without a request is not a “missed pickup.” It is an unscheduled large item. Book through MyUtility or call 311 first.

Recycling

Winnipeg Recycling Schedule — Blue Cart Rules, Accepted Items and Plastic Bag Contamination

Winnipeg accepts rigid plastic packaging, paper and cardboard, and empty rinsed containers made of glass, plastic and metal in recycling carts. The key local rule is that recyclables should not be put into plastic bags before they go into the recycling cart, even if the bag packaging says it can be used for recyclables.

Accepted in Recycling Cart
  • Rigid plastic packaging.
  • Paper and cardboard.
  • Empty and rinsed glass containers.
  • Empty and rinsed plastic containers.
  • Empty and rinsed metal containers.
Do Not Put in Recycling or Garbage Carts
  • Aerosols.
  • Batteries.
  • Electronics.
  • Automotive fluids and parts.
  • Household chemicals with hazardous symbols.
  • Bagged recyclables.

Plastic bag warning: Do not bag recyclables. If you collect recycling in a kitchen bag, empty the contents loose into the cart and keep the plastic bag out of the blue cart.

Drop-Off

4R Winnipeg Depots — Brady, Pacific and Panet Drop-Off Options for Recycling, Yard Waste and Garbage

4R Winnipeg Depots are for residents to drop off recyclable, reusable or compostable items. Garbage is accepted only at the Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot at the current tipping fee rate listed by the City. Pacific and Panet are recycling-only locations and do not accept garbage.

Apartments & Multi-Unit

Winnipeg Apartment and Multi-Unit Garbage Rules — Bins, Weekly Service and Extra Volume Fees

Multi-unit properties are not always the same as single-family cart homes. Properties with eight or more dwelling units may sign up for City multi-unit collection service. Recycling and garbage are collected every week on a set day, but the collection day can shift on holiday weeks.

What Multi-Unit Properties Get
  • Eligible for 120 litres of recycling per unit per week.
  • Eligible for 120 litres of garbage per unit per week.
  • Most properties receive bin service.
  • Some properties may use a mix of carts and bins.
  • Service depends on property layout, volume and truck access.
Resident Checklist
  • Ask the property manager which bins are for garbage and recycling.
  • Do not put large items beside bins without approval.
  • Do not contaminate recycling bins with plastic bags or food.
  • Ask whether large item pickup is handled by the building or by the resident.
  • Report overflowing bins to the property owner first when service is private or building-managed.

Move-out warning: Leaving mattresses, sofas or broken furniture beside a multi-unit bin can create building fees or enforcement problems. Ask the landlord, condo board or property manager before placing anything outside.

Missed Pickup

Missed Garbage Pickup Winnipeg — What to Check Before Reporting a Missed Collection

If your carts are not collected by 6 p.m. on collection day, you can report a missed recycling, garbage or yard waste collection through MyUtility. But before reporting, check the common reasons carts are left behind: late set-out, overflow, extra material beside the cart, snow around the cart, blocked access, wrong collection day or hazardous items.

1

Wait until after 6 p.m.

The official cart page says to report missed collection if carts are not collected by 6 p.m. Do not report too early if the route may still be running.

2

Check placement and overflow

If your cart was overflowing, had material on top of the lid or had extra bags beside it, it may not be collected.

3

Check snow and lane access

Snow under or on top of carts can stop collection. Back-lane carts must be accessible at the edge of the lane.

4

Report through MyUtility or 311

Use the missed collection form or call 311 with your address, cart type and details about what was missed.

Official missed pickup report: Use the City’s MyUtility missed collection form after checking timing and placement.

No official relevant embeddable video was found from the City of Winnipeg waste pages, official waste authority pages, or an official City YouTube channel at the time of writing. Because no verified official video was found, this article does not embed a random YouTube or creator video.

Best for: New residents, homeowners, apartment residents, yard-waste users, 4R Depot visitors and residents reporting missed pickup should rely on the official written City and MyUtility links in this article until Winnipeg publishes or links a relevant official waste video.

If the City later publishes an official garbage collection, recycling, yard waste, 4R Depot or MyUtility video, it should be added here using the official embed URL only. For exact pickup dates, missed collection, fees, yard-waste areas, depot hours and service alerts, residents should still verify through official City links.

Number 1 mistake: Plastic bags in the blue cart. They jam sorting machines and send entire truckloads to landfill. Take them to Kroger, Publix, or Target drop-off bins instead.
