Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my York trash pickup schedule?

York trash pickup schedule garbage collection in the City of York, Pennsylvania is based on your refuse district and designated pickup point. City curbside customers generally have two trash collection days each week. York City is divided roughly along Market Street into refuse districts, with routes handled across Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday collection crews.

Set trash, recycling, yard waste or approved large items at your designated pickup point by 6:00 AM. The City advises placing items out after 5:00 PM the night before to avoid missing early routes. Crews may run from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and in extreme heat or severe winter weather the hauler may be allowed to start at 5:00 AM.

York City does not work like a simple once-a-week cart city. The City uses refuse districts and designated pickup points. Some homes use curbside pickup, some use alley pickup, and some hybrid-service areas use City-issued totes. Your first job is to confirm your normal pickup point, then build your weekly routine around trash, recycling and yard waste timing.

1

Confirm you are in the City of York, PA

This article is not for York County townships, York Region Ontario, York UK, York Maine, Yorktown, or private-hauler suburban addresses. Use City of York rules only if your property is a York City curbside customer.

2

Find your designated pickup point

The City says each property has one designated collection point. If your trash is normally collected in an alley, do not move it to the front curb unless the City or hauler instructs you.

3

Separate first-day and second-day materials

Trash is collected twice weekly. Yard waste remains on the first collection day. Recycling moved to the second collection day under the 2025 contractor change.

4

Put items out by 6:00 AM

Late items are not a missed pickup. Place items out after 5:00 PM the night before and by 6:00 AM on collection day.

Resident shortcut: If your collection day is unclear, contact the City Environmental Bureau before copying a neighbor. Street, alley and district routing can make nearby homes look similar but operate differently.

  • You pay or receive City of York refuse service.
  • Your service is under the City’s curbside collection program.

  • Your bill comes directly from a private hauler.
  • You are searching for York Region, Ontario.

Trash Rules

York City Garbage Collection Rules — 6 Units, 32-Gallon Bags/Cans and 40-Pound Limit

York City’s most important trash rule is the unit limit. Each household may place up to 6 units of trash per collection. A unit can be a bag, a can, a small approved bundle of wood, a passenger tire off rim, or a Christmas tree after the first two full weeks of January.

Accepted Regular Trash Setup
  • Use securely tied trash bags.
  • Or use plastic or metal outdoor trash cans with lids and handles.
  • Maximum can or bag size: 32 gallons.
  • Maximum filled weight: 40 pounds.
  • Trash inside cans must still be in securely tied bags.
  • Everything must remain below the rim of the can.
Common Rejection Reasons
  • Contractor bags or oversized bags.
  • Kitchen, bathroom or indoor cans without proper handles.
  • Cardboard boxes used as trash containers.
  • Crates, baskets, grocery bags or storage totes.
  • Trash heavier than 40 pounds.
  • More than 6 units placed out by one household.

Move-out tip: If you are cleaning a rental, do not put a whole apartment cleanout in boxes at the alley. Boxed trash, over-limit bags, loose piles, construction debris and electronics can become violations or remain uncollected.

Recycling

York Recycling Schedule 2026 — Thursday/Friday Recycling After the 2025 Hauler Change

York City changed recycling timing when ESC Waste Services began the new curbside contract. Recycling moved to the second collection day. If your recycling had been Monday, it moved to Thursday. If your recycling had been Tuesday, it moved to Friday. Yard waste stayed on the first collection day.

Recycle These City-Listed Materials
  • Clean plastic, glass and metal bottles, jars and cans.
  • Clean corrugated cardboard.
  • Clean newspaper.
  • Flattened cardboard bundled with twine or placed inside/with the recycling container.
  • Heavier items placed above lighter items so wind does not blow them out.
Do Not Recycle These
  • Plastic bags or plastic-bagged recyclables.
  • Plastic bags used as recycling bin liners.
  • Paperboard/chipboard food boxes when not currently accepted.
  • Dirty cardboard or greasy food packaging.
  • Random “wishful recycling” items not listed by the City.

Need a recycling container? York City lists green recycling containers at City Hall for $3 each, limit one, with proof of residency. Cash only is listed on the City page.

Recycling Rules
Yard Waste

York Yard Waste Pickup — First Collection Day, March Through November Weather Permitting

Yard waste remains on the first collection day of the week. York City lists yard waste service from March through November 30, weather permitting. The March start date can depend on weather, so check City announcements if you are preparing early-spring cleanup material.

Accepted Yard Waste Preparation
  • Use authorized yellow yard waste cans or kraft paper bags.
  • Keep each can, bag or bundle under 40 pounds.
  • Branches must be less than 4 inches in diameter.
  • Maximum branch bundle size is 3 feet by 1 foot.
  • Use biodegradable kraft paper bags for leaves, prunings and garden residue.
  • Keep yard waste separate from regular trash.
Yard Waste Mistakes
  • Plastic bags are not accepted for yard waste.
  • Do not line yard waste cans with bags.
  • Grass clippings are not yard waste in York City and count as regular trash.
  • Branches should not extend above the rim of cans or bags.
  • Overweight bundles can be left behind.

Container note: Yellow yard waste cans can be purchased at City Hall for $3 each with proof of residency, according to the City recycling and yard waste page.

Hybrid Program

York Hybrid Trash Collection Program — 96-Gallon Totes in Selected Districts

Beginning May 1, 2025, the City introduced a Hybrid Trash Collection Service Program in certain refuse districts using semi-automated trucks and City-issued 96-gallon totes. This program is not citywide. It applies to areas where the City says there is enough space to use specialized trucks.

Hybrid Districts Listed by the City
  • Colony Park.
  • Fireside.
  • Springdale.
  • The Avenues.
Hybrid Tote Rules
  • Totes are for bagged trash only.
  • Do not use the tote for recycling.
  • Do not use the tote for yard waste.
  • The 6-bag limit still applies if placing bags at the curb.
  • Totes are City property and must stay at the assigned address.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged tote replacement is listed at $75.

Rental-property warning: If a 96-gallon hybrid tote is assigned to the property, it should not leave with a tenant. The City says each tote is coded and assigned to a specific address.

Holiday Delay

York 2026 Holiday Trash Schedule — Six Major Holidays Delay Collections

York City’s curbside hauler observes six major holidays. If one of those holidays falls on a weekday, collections beginning with the holiday and continuing for the rest of the affected week are delayed by one day. If the holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday, the City says collections continue as usual with no changes.

Holiday2026 DateDayResident Action
New Year’s DayJanuary 1, 2026ThursdayThursday and Friday routes delayed one day.
Memorial DayMay 25, 2026MondayAll Monday-Friday collections delayed one day that week.
Independence DayJuly 4, 2026SaturdayNo collection change if the holiday is on Saturday.
Labor DaySeptember 7, 2026MondayAll Monday-Friday collections delayed one day that week.
Thanksgiving DayNovember 26, 2026ThursdayThursday and Friday collections delayed one day.
Christmas DayDecember 25, 2026FridayFriday collections delayed one day.

Simple holiday logic: If the holiday happens before your collection day in the same workweek, expect a one-day delay. If your pickup happened before the holiday, it normally stays on schedule.

Large Items

York Large Item Pickup — Schedule 7 to 10 Days Ahead and Wait for Confirmation

York City curbside customers may schedule up to five approved household furniture, appliance or bulky items each week as part of regular curbside service. There is no additional fee listed to schedule a large-item collection, but the pickup must be scheduled 7 to 10 days in advance and confirmed.

  1. Submit the large item request form or call 717-843-1240.
  2. Wait for a callback from the Large Item Attendant.
  3. Wait for the email confirmation with the scheduled date.
  4. Only place the item out after 5:00 PM the night before the confirmed date.
  5. Place the item at the pickup point by 6:00 AM on the scheduled date.
Do Not Schedule / Not Accepted Examples

  • Pianos, organs and pool tables except limited child-size exceptions.
  • Large trampolines, fencing sections and garage doors.
  • Car parts, shingles, bricks, concrete, stone and dirt.
  • Propane tanks and riding lawn mowers.

Missed Collection

Missed Trash Pickup in York PA — Check These Rules Before Filing a Complaint

York City asks residents to report missed collection through the official form. But first, check the common reasons trash is left behind. If your items were late, overweight, over limit or in the wrong container, the hauler may not return.

1

Was it at the right pickup point?

York properties have designated pickup points such as curb, alley, side or rear. A pile in the wrong place may not count as missed pickup.

2

Was it out by 6:00 AM?

Collection can occur between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. Late set-out after crews passed is not a missed collection.

3

Was it inside the size and weight limit?

Use 32-gallon and 40-pound limits. Contractor bags, crates, boxes, grocery bags and wrong containers can be rejected.

4

Submit the form and leave items in place

After a missed pickup request, the hauler has 24 hours to return. If trash remains after that, submit a second request or email refuserecycling@yorkcity.org.

Need help fast? Large item and missed collection service is listed at 717-843-1240, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Special Waste

Electronics, Paint, Sharps, Tires, Medication and Christmas Trees in York

Not everything belongs in regular trash or large-item pickup. York City and York County Solid Waste Authority provide separate guidance for electronics, sharps, medication, paint, motor oil, tires and Christmas trees. These details matter because some items are banned by state law or must be prepared safely.

Special Waste Rules
  • Televisions, computers and computer-related electronics must go through an electronics recycling program.
  • Sharps should go in a heavy-duty plastic bottle with a tight lid, marked “SHARPS,” then placed in a securely tied trash bag.
  • Cooking oil should go in a heavy-duty plastic bottle with a tight lid and then in regular trash, not recycling.
  • Small amounts of paint can be dried with cat litter and securely sealed before regular trash.
  • Motor oil facility options should be checked with YCSWA.
Christmas Trees
  • City staff generally collect live Christmas trees during the first two full weeks of January.
  • Trees must be completely bare.
  • Remove plastic bags, lights, tinsel, ornaments and stands.
  • After the first two full weeks, remaining trees may be collected as regular trash.
  • Each remaining tree then counts as one trash unit.
