Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Langley trash pickup schedule?

Langley trash pickup schedule garbage collection depends on whether your address is in the Township of Langley or the City of Langley. Township single-family homes generally have weekly Green Cart and recycling collection, with garbage every other week. City of Langley residents use City-scheduled garbage, organics and recycling service, with recycling weekly and garbage/organics schedule shown in the City guide.

For Township homes, carts and recycling should be curbside by 7:30 AM and should not normally be placed out before 8:00 PM the night before. For City of Langley automated collection, bins should be at the curb by 7:30 AM, wheels toward the house, lid opening toward the street and at least 1 metre away from obstacles.

The most important Langley waste rule is geographical. A resident in Willoughby, Walnut Grove, Aldergrove, Murrayville or Brookswood may be dealing with Township of Langley rules. A resident in Langley City near Douglas Crescent, downtown Langley or City residential streets may be dealing with City of Langley rules.

That difference changes the contractor, cart program, large-item pickup process, municipal contact and sometimes whether your property receives garbage and organics collection at all. Do not copy a schedule from a friend unless they are in the same municipality and service area.

Use Township of Langley Rules If…
  • Your official property service is through the Township.
  • Your missed garbage or Green Cart contact is Sierra Waste Services.
  • Your collection calendar is at tol.ca/calendar.
  • You have Township Green Cart, garbage cart, blue box, yellow bag and grey box setup.
Use City of Langley Rules If…
  • Your address is inside the City of Langley municipal boundary.
  • Your contractor contact is Emterra Environmental.
  • Your City waste page shows automated garbage and organics bins.
  • Your large item pickup is handled by City/Emterra instructions.
Township Schedule

Township of Langley Garbage Pickup Schedule — Weekly Green Cart and Recycling, Biweekly Garbage

For Township of Langley properties receiving municipal garbage collection, Green Cart and recycling are collected weekly, while garbage is collected every other week. The Township says residents should enter the address into the collection calendar and can set reminders for garbage, recycling and Green Cart service.

Green Cart

Collected weekly for food scraps, yard trimmings and soiled paper. Place it at the curb by 7:30 AM on collection day.

Recycling

Collected weekly using the Township’s blue box, yellow bag and grey box system. Keep streams separated.

Garbage

Collected every other week for items not accepted in Green Cart, curbside recycling or take-back programs.

Rural-area warning: If the Township calendar only shows recycling for your address, your property may receive only Township recycling service and not municipal garbage or organics collection. Some rural properties and some strata complexes have different service arrangements.

Recycling

Langley Recycling Pickup — Blue Box, Yellow Bag, Grey Box and Depot-Only Items

Both City and Township residents need to sort recycling correctly, but the exact contact and schedule page depends on the municipality. Township of Langley uses a three-container curbside recycling system. City of Langley recycling is handled through Recycle BC’s residential program and is picked up weekly on the same day as City green waste and biweekly garbage service.

Blue Box

Township uses the blue box for containers. City of Langley accepts plastic containers, cartons, paper cups and metal containers in the appropriate curbside recycling stream.

Yellow Bag

Used for paper and cardboard in the Township. City recycling guidance also lists paper and cardboard as accepted curbside material.

Grey Box

Used for glass bottles and jars where provided. Keep glass separate so it does not contaminate other materials.

Do not bag recyclables in plastic bags. Township guidance says clear or translucent blue bags for extra recyclables are not accepted. Use official containers, request replacement containers, or take excess recyclables to a local recycling and waste centre.

Need Township recycling containers? Blue boxes, grey boxes and yellow bags are available from Township facilities, and delivery can be requested online or by calling Sierra Waste Services.

Langley Waste Video Guide — Township Recycling Truck Sorting Video

The Township of Langley official waste page links a short video explaining why separated recyclables stay separated once collected. This is useful for residents who think everything is dumped together in the recycling truck, and it supports the blue box, yellow bag and grey box sorting guidance in this article.

Best for: New residents, townhouse residents, families with extra cardboard, residents confused by the three-container system, and anyone unsure why glass, paper/cardboard and containers must stay in the correct stream.

This video supports the recycling guidance in this article. For exact pickup dates, holiday shifts, Green Cart rules, large item pickup, missed collection, extra garbage stickers, rural service status, snow delays and service alerts, residents should still verify details through the official City or Township links above.

Green Cart / Organics

Langley Green Cart and Organics Pickup — Food Scraps, Yard Trimmings and Plastic Bag Mistakes

Township of Langley Green Cart is for food scraps, yard trimmings and soiled paper. City of Langley organics service uses City-provided organics carts. In both systems, organics should be kept out of garbage whenever accepted, and plastic bags are the fastest way to contaminate the stream.

Township Green Cart Tips
  • Place Green Cart curbside by 7:30 AM.
  • Use for food scraps, yard trimmings and soiled paper.
  • No compostable or biodegradable plastic bags.
  • Line the bottom with newspaper.
  • Layer food scraps under yard trimmings.
  • Keep the lid closed and store in shade when possible.
City Organics Notes
  • City yard waste must be placed in organics carts.
  • Extra yard waste is collected only during extra yard pickup periods.
  • Paper lawn/leaf bags are not accepted for regular City yard waste pickup.
  • Use City updates for extra yard pickup dates.
  • Contact Emterra or City Engineering for issues.

Pet waste warning: Township guidance says pet waste is not accepted in the Green Cart. Small quantities may be double-bagged with air removed and placed in garbage, or disposed through dedicated pet-waste options.

Garbage

Langley Garbage Collection Rules — Biweekly Township Garbage and City Automated Bin Rules

Township garbage carts should contain only items that are not accepted in the Green Cart, curbside recycling program or take-back/depot programs. City garbage bins also cannot be used for banned materials such as electronics, paint, chemicals, batteries, large appliances, construction debris and recyclable materials.

Township Garbage Rules
  • Garbage is collected every other week for properties in the municipal garbage collection area.
  • Garbage carts should be curbside by 7:30 AM.
  • Do not set garbage out before 8:00 PM the night before.
  • If a tag is left, read it before reporting a missed pickup.
  • Extra garbage needs an Extra Garbage sticker.
  • Individual garbage items must not exceed Township size limits.
City Garbage Bin Rules
  • Bin must be at the curb by 7:30 AM.
  • Lid must be fully closed.
  • Wheels face the house; lid opening faces the street.
  • Keep 1 metre from obstacles.
  • No electronics, paints, solvents, chemicals or batteries.
  • No large appliances, construction waste or recyclable materials.

Extra garbage tip: Township residents who occasionally produce extra garbage can buy Extra Garbage stickers for each 80L can or bag placed beside the Township cart. If your household regularly produces more garbage, check cart-size and additional-cart options instead of treating overflow as a weekly habit.

Large Items

Langley Large Item Pickup — Township Four Items Per Year and City Appointment Rules

Township Large Item Pickup
  • Available to residents with municipal garbage collection.
  • Up to four large items per year.
  • Can be used all at once or spread through the year.

Apartments, Strata & Rural

Langley Apartments, Townhomes, Strata and Rural Properties — Why Your Pickup May Be Different

Langley waste service changes sharply by property type. Some Township townhomes and mobile home complexes receive curbside collection; some apartments, condos and centralized properties use different cart systems. City of Langley says commercial properties and multi-family homes such as condos and townhouses do not receive City waste collection services.

Ask Before You Move In
  • Is the address City of Langley or Township of Langley?
  • Does the property receive municipal garbage and organics?
  • Is recycling curbside, centralized or private?
  • Who handles large item pickup?
  • Are extra garbage stickers or private service needed?
  • Where are glass, flexible plastics, foam and hazardous items taken?
Rural / Strata Confusion
  • Some Township rural homes may only show recycling on the calendar.
  • Some strata properties may use private collection.
  • Some townhomes have centralized cart collection.
  • Some apartments must follow building manager rules.
  • Never assume a nearby subdivision has the same service.

Move-out warning: Mattresses, carpets, renovation debris, hazardous waste, propane tanks, tires and oversized piles are not “just garbage.” Confirm large item, depot or private disposal rules before placing them outside.
