Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Prince George’s County trash pickup schedule?

Prince George’s County trash pickup schedule garbage collection is address-based and applies to residents receiving County-contracted collection service. Use the County’s trash collection page and online address tool to verify your trash, recycling and other service days before setting anything out.

Missed / Appointment Help

Prince George’s County does not have one simple countywide trash day. Your exact schedule depends on whether your address receives County-contracted service and whether you live inside a municipality with separate collection rules. That is why the address tool is the first step, not the last step.

1

Open the County trash collection page

Use the official trash collection page and select the County online address tool. Enter your household address and review the service day information shown in the result box.

2

Confirm County-contracted service

If the address tool shows County-collected service, follow the County rules in this guide. If your address is inside a municipality, use your municipal waste office because your pickup schedule may differ.

3

Write down each stream separately

Trash, recycling, Monday organics/yard trim, bulky trash, white goods, scrap tires, electronics and scrap metal do not all work the same way. Keep separate notes for regular pickup and appointment-only pickup.

4

Check alerts during weather or heat

County waste service may slide during storms or start earlier during heat periods. Do not assume a missed pickup until you check current County alerts and holiday rules.

Official path: Use the County trash collection page and the linked address lookup tool to verify service day and County-collected status.

County vs Municipality

Prince George’s County Service Area — Do Not Confuse County Pickup With Municipal Pickup

This page focuses on residents receiving County-contracted waste collection service. Prince George’s County includes many municipalities and communities. Some residents receive municipal pickup, HOA/private service, apartment service or commercial service instead of County curbside service.

Likely County-Contracted Service
  • Your address appears in the County address lookup.
  • You have County-issued trash, recycling and green organics carts.
  • Your trash/recycling schedule matches County residential collection.
  • You use PGC311 for missed collection and appointment-only services.
Check Before Following This Guide
  • You live inside a municipality with its own public works department.
  • You live in an apartment or condo with private dumpsters.
  • Your HOA or property manager contracts a private hauler.
  • Your property is commercial, institutional or mixed-use.

Resident warning: If your city or town runs its own pickup, County holiday slides, bulky rules and appointment services may not apply. Always verify with the address tool or PGC311 before putting out bulky items, appliances or scrap tires.

Carts & Set-Out

Prince George’s County Cart Rules — Trash, Recycling and Green Organics Carts

Eligible County-contracted households receive one trash wheeled cart, one recycling wheeled cart and one green organics wheeled cart. These carts are assigned to the address. New residents who move into a home where carts are missing should contact PGC311.

Do This
  • Set carts out after 6:00 PM the day before collection.
  • Have items at the curb by the pickup start time.
  • Place carts with the arrow and lift bar facing the street.
  • Bag trash before placing it in the trash cart.
  • Keep recycling loose, not bagged.
  • Remove carts from the curb after service on collection day.
Avoid This
  • Do not leave carts at the curb for days after pickup.
  • Do not bag recyclables in plastic bags.
  • Do not place items in front of or immediately beside the cart.
  • Do not let lids remain open or overflow.
  • Do not rely on a stolen-cart replacement from the County.
  • Do not take County carts with you when you move.

New resident detail: County pages say new residents moving into a home may request cart delivery through PGC311, but verification through the tax assessor’s file may be required. Carts should remain at the delivered address.

Regular Trash

Prince George’s County Trash Collection Rules — Weekly Trash, 6 AM Start and Heat-Season Timing

County-contracted trash collection is handled by the Sustainable Waste Management Division and its contracted haulers. Residents should place trash containers at the front curb by the required pickup start time on their regular collection day.

Regular Trash Checklist
  • Verify your collection day by address.
  • Bag trash before placing it in the trash cart.
  • Keep the cart lid closed.
  • Do not put recycling loose in the trash cart if it belongs in recycling.
  • Do not place bulky items where they block traffic, sidewalks or common areas.
  • Bring carts back after collection is completed.
Heat / Weather Reminder
  • Normal County pickup begins at 6:00 AM.
  • County notices may start collection earlier during extreme heat periods.
  • Inclement weather can suspend or slide collection.
  • Leave items at the curb after filing a missed pickup request if County instructions say so.
  • Check current alerts before assuming your route was skipped.

Municipality warning: Residents living inside a municipality should check with their municipal waste management office for timing changes and collection rules. County heat-season start times and slides may not match city-run service.

Recycling

Prince George’s County Recycling Pickup — Single-Stream Recycling, Loose Items and Missed Recycling

Prince George’s County residential recycling is single-stream for County-contracted customers. Recyclables go in the same recycling container and are sorted at the Materials Recycling Facility. Residents may use a County-issued recycling cart or another acceptable container marked with an “X” or the word “Recycling.”

  • Place recyclables loose in the recycling cart.
  • Break down cardboard and keep it dry when possible.
  • Use a box or receptacle marked “Recycling” or with a large “X” if needed.
  • Place heavier recyclables on top of lighter materials to prevent blowing.
  • Keep the lid closed when possible.
Do Not Do This
  • Do not bag recyclables in plastic bags.
  • Do not place trash in the recycling cart.
  • Do not leave cardboard loose in wind without breaking it down.
  • Do not place carts where cars or obstacles block collection access.
  • Do not report before checking the route and collection window.

Official Recycling Rules
Monday Organics

Prince George’s County Yard Trim and Food Scraps — Monday Organics Collection Rules

Yard trim and food scraps are collected through the County organics program on Mondays, year-round, except on listed holidays. Food scraps must be placed in the County-issued 32-gallon green organics cart. Yard trim may be loose in an approved container, in large paper yard bags, in a clearly marked yard waste can or in the County-issued organics cart.

Accepted Yard Trim
  • Grass clippings.
  • Leaves.
  • Small branches and brush.
  • Christmas trees from December through January.
  • Food scraps through PGC Composts when placed in the green cart.
Organics Mistakes
  • Plastic bags are not accepted for yard trim.
  • Cardboard boxes are not acceptable yard-trim containers.
  • Food scraps should not be loose in paper yard bags.
  • Food-related items must go in the County-issued green organics cart.
  • Wet leaves and grass have stricter weight concerns.

Bundle and weight rules for yard trim

Limbs collected curbside should not exceed 4 feet in length or 3 inches in diameter and should be securely tied in bundles. Bundles, bags and cans of dry grass or leaves must weigh less than 60 pounds; wet grass and leaves must weigh less than 25 pounds.

Large volume tip: Residents with large yard-trim loads can use Brown Station Road options, but trailers and commercial-looking vehicles have different restrictions and may need to use the Organics Composting Facility instead of the convenience center.

Bulky Trash

Prince George’s County Bulky Trash Pickup — Four Items Weekly, No Appointment for Standard Bulky Items

Eligible residents receiving County-contracted trash and recycling collection can set out up to four acceptable bulky trash items, or four tightly secured bags of small household items, on their regular trash collection day. No appointment is needed for standard curbside bulky items.

Standard Weekly Bulky Pickup
  • Up to four acceptable bulky items.
  • Or up to four tightly secured bags of small household items.
  • Place next to the trash can on regular trash day.
  • Set items out by the pickup start time.
  • Follow HOA, civic association and townhome placement rules.
Still Requires PGC311 Appointment
  • Scrap tires.
  • White goods and appliances.
  • Refrigerators and air conditioners.
  • Washers and dryers.
  • Electronics recycling.
  • Scrap metal collection.

Mattresses and box springs

For curbside bulky collection, mattresses and box springs must be completely covered in a protective plastic covering. If a resident delivers mattresses or box springs to the landfill or accepted drop-off facility, the County notes that the protective encasement requirement differs.

Do not place items in common areas. Townhome residents should place standard bulky items or bags at the curb in front of the townhome or assigned parking space, not in common grounds. The hauler or County staff will not collect from common areas.
