Quick Resident Answer
How do I find my Detroit trash pickup schedule?

Detroit trash pickup schedule garbage collection is address-based. Use the City’s official waste pickup schedule tool, type your street address, choose the correct address result, then select “My Schedule” to see your trash, recycling, bulk and yard waste pickup day.

Detroit’s current service model collects trash, recycling, bulk and yard waste weekly on the same scheduled day. Set materials out no earlier than 6:00 PM the night before and no later than 7:00 AM on trash day. Return containers by 9:00 PM on collection day.

The fastest way to avoid a missed-pickup mistake in Detroit is to stop guessing by neighborhood name and use the official address lookup. Detroit’s DPW page directs residents to the waste pickup schedule tool for trash, recycling, bulk and yard waste.

1

Open the official schedule tool

Go to the City of Detroit waste pickup schedule page and type your street address where the tool asks for it.

2

Choose the correct address result

Detroit streets can have similar names. Select the exact address from the result list before opening “My Schedule.”

3

Save text reminders

Enter your phone number in the tool or text your street address to 313-800-7905 to get reminders before pickup.

4

Know your contractor

Your pickup problem is handled first by your assigned hauler: Priority Waste for east and southwest service areas, or Waste Management for the west side.

Official lookup: Use the City’s schedule tool before calling a missed pickup or setting out bulk on the wrong day.

Detroit Trash Contractors — Priority Waste vs Waste Management Service Areas

Detroit residents should call the correct contractor for same-day service issues. DPW remains the City contact for broader solid waste questions, paid pickup, illegal dumping and unresolved issues, but your assigned contractor is usually the first contact for a missed cart.

Do not call the wrong hauler first. If you live on the west side and call Priority Waste, or on the east/southwest side and call Waste Management, the issue may sit unresolved. Confirm the assigned contractor in the City schedule tool before reporting.

Set-Out Rules

Detroit Trash Set-Out Rules — 6 PM, 7 AM and 9 PM Matter

Detroit’s collection rules are strict because carts, bulk piles and yard waste can block sidewalks, alleys, vacant lots and street access. Set material out too early, too late or in front of the wrong property and the issue may become a ticket or missed collection.

Do This
  • Place carts, recycling, bulk and yard waste at the proper curb location after 6:00 PM the night before pickup.
  • Have everything out no later than 7:00 AM on collection day.
  • Remove containers from the curb by 9:00 PM on the day of collection.
  • Place bulk only in front of your own household.
  • Keep yard waste, bulk, recycling and regular refuse separated.
  • Use the schedule tool or text reminders before holiday or weather weeks.
Avoid This
  • Do not place bulk in front of a vacant lot or another structure.
  • Do not store refuse or recycling carts in the front yard.
  • Do not mix yard waste with trash or recycling.
  • Do not use plastic bags for yard waste.
  • Do not put household hazardous waste in regular trash.
  • Do not leave carts at the curb after collection day.

Fine risk: The City’s 2026 yard/bulk flyer warns that failure to follow set-out and packaging requirements can result in tickets. Bulk exceeding limits can also trigger higher fines, so do not treat the curb like a private dump site.

Official Video Help

Detroit Waste Video Guide — Curbside Etiquette PSA

This official City-linked video is useful because Detroit’s biggest pickup problems are often not the day itself, but cart placement, recycling habits, bulk set-out and curb etiquette. It supports the set-out guidance in this article and helps residents understand how to prepare materials before pickup day.

Best for: New Detroit residents, homeowners, renters in 1-4 unit buildings, residents starting recycling, residents with weekly bulk items, and anyone who has received a missed pickup, oops notice or sanitation ticket.

This video supports the practical guidance in this article. For exact pickup dates, text reminders, contractor contacts, weekly route changes, yard waste season, bulk limits, HHW hours and drop-off rules, residents should still verify details through the official City of Detroit links below.

Regular Trash

Detroit Weekly Trash Collection — What Goes in the City Garbage Container

Detroit’s household trash service is weekly. Regular trash should go into the City garbage container and should not be mixed with recyclables, yard waste, hazardous waste or bulk debris. If an item is too large, too hazardous or too heavy, it likely belongs in the bulk, paid pickup, drop-off or HHW pathway instead.

Use Regular Trash For
  • Bagged household trash.
  • Small non-recyclable household waste.
  • Items that fit properly inside the garbage container with the lid managed safely.
  • Small waste that is not hazardous, recyclable, yard waste or bulk.
Do Not Use Regular Trash For
  • Paint, fuels, batteries, chemicals or flammable products.
  • Construction debris, concrete, brick, asphalt or shingles.
  • Tires, auto parts and fuel tanks.
  • Yard waste that should be bagged or bundled separately.
  • Loose recyclables that belong in the blue recycling cart.
  • Large furniture, mattresses or appliances that belong in bulk collection.

Resident habit: Keep a weekly reminder for the night before pickup. Detroit allows set-out after 6 PM, so setting carts and bulk at night prevents missed 7 AM deadlines without leaving material out for days.

Recycling

Detroit Recycling Pickup — Free Curbside Recycling Cart, Weekly Pickup and What Goes in the Blue Bin

Detroit offers free curbside recycling to single-family homes and multifamily buildings with 1-4 units, but residents must opt in and request a recycling cart. Larger apartment buildings with 5 or more units should use Recycle Here! or talk to property management about adding recycling service.

Accepted Curbside Recycling Categories
  • Cardboard such as boxes, paper tubes, cartons and cereal boxes.
  • Mixed paper such as junk mail, newspaper, office paper and magazines.
  • Metal such as beverage cans, food cans and clean aluminum foil.
  • Glass bottles, jars and food containers.
  • Rigid plastics such as bottles, jugs, jars, trays and containers.
Do Not Put in Recycling
  • Plastic bags or bagged recyclables.
  • Food or liquids.
  • Styrofoam containers or packaging.
  • Propane tanks, paint cans, flammable liquids or chemicals.
  • Medical waste, batteries or light bulbs.
  • Wood, construction debris or yard waste.

How to get a recycling cart in Detroit

Residents can play the online Recycling Challenge Game to request a free cart, or contact Green Living Science at 313-871-4000 ext. 3. If you do not want to use the free cart options, the City page also notes you may pay $25 through your waste hauler.

Hard-to-recycle items: Detroit’s Recycle Here! drop-off site accepts items such as plastic bags, Styrofoam, cardboard, paper, metal, books and more. Recycle Here! is at 5960 Lincoln Street.

Yard Waste

Detroit Yard Waste Pickup 2026 — March 30 to December 19 Weekly Collection

Detroit’s 2026 yard waste flyer lists yard waste collection from March 30 through December 19, 2026. Yard waste is collected weekly on your scheduled collection day with a separate truck.

Accepted Yard Waste
  • Leaves.
  • Grass clippings.
  • Shrubs.
  • Twigs and branches prepared within size limits.
  • Yard waste in paper biodegradable lawn/yard bags.
  • Yard waste in your own 32-gallon reusable plastic or metal container clearly marked “Yard Waste Only.”
Yard Waste Mistakes
  • No plastic bags.
  • Do not place yard waste in the refuse container.
  • Do not mix yard waste with refuse or recycling.
  • Do not place yard waste too close to the garbage container.
  • Do not set yard waste out before 6 PM the night before pickup.

Yard waste size and weight rules

A 32-gallon yard waste container has a 60-pound weight restriction. Twigs or branches under 4 feet long and 2 inches in diameter may go in yard waste bags. Brush over 2 inches in diameter should be tied and placed at the curb; bundles should not be more than 4 feet long, more than 50 pounds, or more than 18 inches in diameter.

Good-neighbor setup: Put bagged yard waste at least 6 feet from the City garbage container or use a clearly marked personal yard-waste container. This prevents the regular trash truck from confusing yard waste with refuse.

Bulk Pickup

Detroit Bulk Trash Pickup — Weekly Bulk Day, Two Cubic Yard Limit and Paid Pickup Option

Bulk items are collected on your scheduled bulk collection day. Detroit’s current model aligns trash, recycling, bulk and yard waste on the same scheduled day, but you should still check the schedule tool because route-specific service issues can change.

Common Bulk Items
  • Furniture.
  • Mattresses.
  • Appliances.
  • Hot water tanks.
  • Carpeting and padding when cut, rolled and tied.
  • Large toys and larger household items.
Bulk Limits and Packaging
  • Two cubic yards is about the size of two stoves.
  • Bulk over 1,000 pounds or two cubic yards will not be collected.
  • Smaller items should be placed in plastic bags or boxes.
  • Each item, bag or bundle should be under 50 pounds.
  • Debris should be under 4 feet long unless a specific rule allows otherwise.
  • Bulk must be placed only in front of your household.

What not to place as standard bulk

The City flyer says concrete, brick, asphalt, shingles, tires and other auto parts, metal poles, pipes, tree trunks and hazardous waste are not accepted as standard bulk. Hazardous liquids, paint, asbestos and lead-related material should go through the proper hazardous waste pathway.

Too much bulk? If your bulk or yard waste exceeds City limits, call DPW at 313-876-0004 to request a paid pickup quote.

Missed Pickup

Missed Trash Pickup Detroit — What to Check Before You Call

A missed pickup is not always a contractor miss. It may be a late set-out, wrong address, blocked cart, improperly mixed waste, bulk over the size limit, plastic-bagged yard waste, or material placed in front of the wrong property.

1

Confirm your schedule

Use the City schedule tool and verify that today is your actual trash, recycling, bulk and yard waste day.

2

Check set-out time

Material should be out by 7:00 AM. If it was placed out later, the route may have already passed.

3

Check preparation

Look for mixed streams, blocked carts, yard waste in plastic bags, bulk over the limit or items placed in front of a vacant lot.

4

Call the correct contractor

Priority Waste handles east and southwest Detroit service areas. Waste Management handles west side service areas. DPW handles escalation and paid pickup.
